? about Voting (mail in vs. booths)

I have never in my life been to an actual voting booth. I honestly don't even know if they exist in WA. I've always been mailed my ballot a few weeks before election day. I've already voted and turned my ballot in.

How does it work for other Bumpies?

  • I've always voted on the day of - except in 2008 when I was living abroad and voted via absentee ballot.

I wish I could say I've already voted, but my state requires that you check a box that says you're out of the area on election day if you want to early vote.  I'm paranoid about lying on stuff like that, so I'll just be voting the day of.

  • We went on Saturday for early voting. We stood in line for about an hour and a half. Z was remarkably well behaved! For ours, they let 4 people in the room at a time. You go to the counter, give them your state id, they print a sticker with your info, put it in the book and then have you verify it and sign beside. Then they gave me a card to put into the front of the machine (like an ATM card almost) and that turns the machine on. You make your selections and then it shows you a summary page and you click vote. Then you hand the card back in to the counter.

  • I've always voted in person.  I like the experience of going to vote.  Makes me feel good.  I don't think it would be the same mailing in a ballot, although I think it is a great option for lots of people.
  • I love going to my polling place.  I have no idea why.  It's just a tradition I like.

I did vote absentee all through college, and it was fine.  I just enjoy something about the pomp and circumstance.

Also, you know how candidates have people shilling for them a hundred yards outside the polling place as if they will change your vote last minute?  I hate that, and I get a real, totally immature pleasure in saying, "I've already decided and it definitely isn't (insert their candidate here)."

LOL That is exactly why I will be early voting from now on, unless I do mail in. There was no one there with any pamphlets or crap. No one was trying to upsell any candidates! It was awesome!

Oh, that would be so nice! When I was younger and more timid I would always end up the lucky winner of a nail file or pen or sumshiz bearing the name of a candidate I despised.

I vote in person, a mix of early voting and day of depending on how it works out. I wish I could have early voted but I was OOT 2 weekends ago and ILs were in town this past weekend. It stops before next weekend so unless I take time off from work before then, it looks like I'll be voting day of. I believe polls open at 7 am so I will just go to work late; I'm sure my bosses will be ok with that.

I'm voting before work, too.  My boss has already said she's cool with me being late.  Then I will do daycare pick up so DH can vote after work.  I've always voted on election day rather than early or absentee.

  • I have always voted in person on Election Day. This year, however, I did an absentee vote b/c my due date is so close. Early voting is really popular in my area (they said about 800 people a day have been voting early in my county). I went to my county courthouse last Thursday and waited in line for at least 30 minutes. I had to sign a form, show my i.d., and then voted on the machines like normal.

  • I vote in person on election day. Here you need a "reason" to do an absentee ballot (out of town, medical issue, etc) and we don't have early voting. So you either have what they consider a "good" reason for absentee or you have to go day of. I did absentee in college, but only then.

  • I have always voted in person, I like the experience of it. Plus I like the "I voted sticker' I enjoy walking around side eying people who do not have one.

  • I walk about five blocks to my polling place on the day of.
