Lovies?

When would you let LO take a small "lovie" to bed? He has one of those owl heads attached to a square of cloth things and a little cat that he loves when playing. He'll cheerfully sit chewing on one of them which makes me think he'd like it in bed.

I'm pretty intense about the SIDS rules and agree with nothing in the crib. What about something small?

  • I wouldn't let DS have anything at all in bed with him right now. Especially one of the toys you're describing as he could end up with it covering his face. With DD, we started letting her sleep with an A and A swaddle blanket when she was 10 months old. I think stuffed animals were around 12 or 13 months. Then again, I'm a super anxious mom, so take that FWIW.

  • I know it isn't recommended to have anything in bed with LO but we recently started letting our 2 month old have his lovie in bed.  I have been told by many not to and also my many that it is perfectly fine. I feel safe letting him have his SMALL, very thin, muslim lovie at night but I also think this decision is up to the mom and how safe she feels.  Maybe you could start letting him have it at naptime and see what he does with it? (Put it on his face, just hold it?)

I hope this helps! I know how hard it is to try and make the best and safest decision for your LO.  I drive myself crazy with guilt half the time trying to listen to ALL the advice but also just follow my gut!

The owl I described is something I'd hold off on too. The cat is small and not at all fluffy. I know I'll chicken out knowing it would buy me so much sleep!

  • Personally I think they're too young to have anything in their cribs. G didn't sleep with his blankie til 6 or 7 months and I was still super nervous at that point.
