Pacifiers - is there really a difference?

I received a couple brands of pacifiers at my shower.  Is there really a difference between them?  I plan on exclusively FF'ing from the begining.  First I will try the Playtex Ventaire bottles.  Does that matter?

Re: Pacifiers - is there really a difference?

  • Yep, some babies are picky. I think we tried 4 brands before we found one she would take and could keep in her mouth.

  • Your baby will let you know.  Our little one was not picky at all as long as she had a pacifier, but we did have a few brands in stock just in case.  The popular ones seem to be the round green soothies and I've heard the little MAMs are also a big hit.

  • Many babies are picky about their packs. DD only liked the 0-6 Nuks, but she even started to turn her nose up at those and prefer her fingers. Baby will definitely let you know what works for them. Keep them all for now.

  • DD won't take a pacifier. I tried several kinds and she didn't like any of them. I agree to try different kinds and see which one baby likes.

  • Every baby is different. We've tried Avent, Gumdrops, Soothies, ect. and LO has a preference for the Avent brand. I EBF and they say gumdrops is the most like a nipple, but DS thinks otherwise.

  • Neither of my kids would take a paci. I didn't push hard, but tried 2 or 3 brands each. They spit it out so I gave up. Not all kids like them.

  • L prefers soothies but every now and then she will take the nuk. I think for some babies they are picky. They are different shapes and fits so I can see why.

  • DS took Soothies then Avent then decided he only wanted his thumb! He still sucks his thumb but only with his blanket too.

DD took soothies as a newborn and then refused everything at 3 months (didn't suck her thumb or anything)

It does matter because your LO might not like some brands.  I would keep the ones you got from the shower and try them with your LO and then find which one your LO likes.

My DD likes the Nuks and hates the soothies.

  • Most hospitals only offer mam or soothies (gumdrop). Soothies mimic a nipple and mams are supposedly orthodontic. While I wouldn't open all that you have, I'd definitely keep them as your baby might have a preference. I'd especially keep them if they are soothies! My dd loves all pacis lol (addict alert), except the playtex orthos.
  • keep 'em all! DD only likes the Playtex Ortho Pro, and we tried several types, including the soothies, and the Avent ones that are the same as her bottle.

  • My LO will only take the mam ones.  The tommee tippee 0-3 month ones were too big for his little face and covered his nose.  He hated the nuks.  Just bought another pack of mams because we've lost a few.
