Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Survival swim course is about $800

This is the course that teaches young babies how to roll themselves over in the water and float face-up.  It teaches older babies how to alternate between swimming face-down and then switching to a float position to rest until they can get themselves to safety.  The course is 5 days a week for approx. 4 weeks - $40/session.  Unless there was a typo in the e-mail, each lesson is only 10 minutes (?!).  There really is no need for DS to know this skill right now since I'll be right with him if we take a swimming class.  We will probably travel this summer to a house with a pool, so I might consider doing it before then.  Anyone else considering it?  I think the website is www.infantswim.com

  • no. ?that price is ridiculous. ?my dad taught me how to do this and i will teach my son. ?he taught me when i was much younger than DS is now but i grew up in FL and we had a pool. ?even though he will never be swimming unattended i still want to teach him to swim early. ?i will start taking DS to the ymca pool soon to get him in the water.

  • Ooh!  How did he teach you?  Are there any books about the technique anywhere??  Was your dad a swimming instructor?  That's just awesome that he taught you that.
  • The only reason we'll be paying for swimming 'lessons' is because I have no other access to a pool during the winter.  Other than that, I'll be teaching DD myself, as I have an expired instructor certification (I'd teach her myself even if I didn't).
  • That is so expensive.  If we had a pool, I guess I would consider it.  I can't believe that they can teach babies to do this.  I've watched a couple of youtube videos where the parents are teaching their children this.
  • he was a firefighter and had all these scuba and water safety certifications. i also have water safety and infant CPR certifications. ?i don't know of any books. ?basically he just took it one skill at a time. ?i plan on starting with floating and taking him under water. ?then i'll have DH place him in the water from the side so that he goes under and then help him into the float position until he can do it himself. ?my dad said i just sort of picked it up. ?haven't started yet so i we will see how it goes. ?he also just threw me into the pool the first time but that isn't really recommended.
  • I know someone who did this course. She said it was great, but she didn't pay $800!
