Best brands of clothes

What brands of clothes should I look for in resale shops? What would be a great find? Which brands should I avoid like the plague?

Re: Best brands of clothes

  • Hanna Andersson stuff holds up really well. I have a few things from my sister, they were from my niece 8 years ago and have been loaned to at least 6 families and still look like newto me.

  • If I'm buying resale/consignment I generally look for top name brands that otherwise are too expensive. Baby gap, Ralph Lauren, Janie & Jack, and I'll also grab Carters & Gymboree if they're in excellent condition. Gerber is one brand I would stay away from. Brand new they're pretty flimsy and don't hold up well at all.

This. Baby Boden is another great brand.

This. Ours doesn't take Walmart clothes, so most of what they have is brand name. Add Guess, the better TCP stuff, Ed Hardy, Zara, Lilly pulitzer, really and thing that Macy's, Neiman Marcus carries, or similar. I frequent a consignment shop in a well to do neighborhood. Totally shocked at what people spend on the clothes new, but no complaints here, my kids get the gorgeous cast offs for next to nothing. Oh, add tommy Hilfiger.

Add H & M to the avoid list. They have nice looking clothes, but the material tends to be thin and I've had the seams come apart in the wash. And no Walmart stuff second hand, unless you need cheap stuff for daycare.

  • Most of our brands are Gap, Baby/Mini Boden, Crew Kids, Next Direct, Restoration Hardware Baby (runs big), Charlie Rocket, Kissy Kissy, Hanna Andersson jammies (fits small), Children's Place stretchies (and I like Children's Place for play clothes too). You will be able to resell these brands when you are done, no problem. I have bid on Mini Boden pants on Ebay and they often go for more than $25 used. Janie & Jack and Gymboree are well liked brands, it just isn't my style for boy clothes.

I would avoid ON, I find their clothes to be poor quality and fit small. I would also avoid Target, Walmart, Carters stuff that is used because it is pretty cheap new.

  • I look for Baby Gap and Janie and Jack. I look for jeans at consignment more than anything because babies can't really wear them out before they grow out of them. I get Carters jeans for $3-5 at my local stores

I always snag up any Baby Gap I can find. I love Hanna Anderson for girls, but they're boy stuff is a little flamboyant for my tastes. Janie and Jack is great, but I've never seen any of their stuff at my local Once Upon a Child. I like Carter's, but I don't think much of the stuff I have from there will last through the next baby. But it's good 'play' clothes--comfy and cheap.

    Baby Gap is soooo cute.

  • Snatch Up:

Gap, Janie and Jack, Gymboree, Crazy 8, Mini Boden, Hanna Anderson, some Old Navy depending on condition and cuteness, Crew Cuts, Ralph Lauren (Runs VERY SMALL), some Carters (same as Old Navy), Lily Pulitzer, Tea, Zutano, Kickypants.

    Avoid:

I totally second avoiding Gerber, super flimsy doesn't hold up well, stretches out, etc. etc. etc. Garanimals (Walmart), Circo (Target) unless it's super cute.

  • Agree with all pp's on good and bad but would like to add some of the BRU brand don't hold up well. They are run small too.

  • I actually would watch the prices in the resale shops. Sometimes they charge you just as much as new sale prices.  I have been able to find stuff on sale (CHEAP) at places like the GAP, Childrens Place, & Gymboree. Just get on their coupon lists. Sometimes just as inexpensive as Walmart.  I have also had great luck at Marshalls finding great deals on name brands (inc Calvin & Ralph).

For the most part there are some brands that hold up better than others. GAP, Gymboree, Faded Glory (Walmart), Carters (including Target Just One You & Walmart Child of Mine), Calvin Klein, & Absorba wash up really well and are really good pieces to have.

Two to watch are Childrens Place (some PJs have seam issues) & Ralph Lauren(my MIL purchased several Ralph Lauren sleepers from Macys and they did not wash well at all. In fact all of my Walmart ones held up great. However the polo shirts I purchased at Marshalls held up fine).

Some to avoid Baby Gear (shrink, fade, all around not good), Babies R Us (fade issues), Gerber, & Garanimals (weird sizing). Also a lot of gift set items I recieved were crap.

I was going to say the exact same thing. I get new clothes on sale from places like the Gap and Gymboree for less than what I can buy them used at our local children's consignment with a combination of sale prices, clearance offers and a coupon or cardholder perks.  For instance this week Baby Gap had 40% their already marked down prices.

Carters, Gap, Children's place, Old Navy are my go-to brands because they seem to fit well and are sized reliably for DD (well, mainly Carters and GAP). I can't fathom paying premium dollar for items that will get stained, pilled and worn for a few months at most.

I stay away from Wal-Mart brands like Faded Glory and Garanimals and from Carter's Watch the Wear and BRU brands.

That's what sales and online coupons are for.  Wink  I got an awesome Janie & Jack winter hat for DD that was only a few bucks more than a Gymboree one.  J&J's quality is pretty awesome and holds up well.  If you can catch a good sale some of the items cost around the same as Carters or Gymboree.  Besides, if you have the luxury to spend a little more for better quality and clothes that won't stretch and fade after a couple washes then why not?

  • agree with not spending too much. Some of the more expensive department stores actually have much better clearance deals on baby stuff than Target/WalmartBRU and are cheaper than consignment.

I just bought a bunch of summer outfits on clearance from Dillard's that were all originally $35+, got them all for $7-12. Last January I got a Christmas dress and snowsuit from Macy's for 80% off.

Marshall's and TJ Maxx also have great deals. They carry Ralph Lauren and other more expensive brands too.

  • I received a lot of hand me downs I love baby gap stuff, joe fresh, and some old navy depends on the item.
I generally find that kids grow so fast that its hard to really invest in anything. Dd was tiny for such a long time and then went from 18 months to 3 ye sizes in 6 months practically skipping all the size 2 items.
  • I actually don't like Carter's too much.  Their stuff is cute but doesn't wash well.  And now that my DD is 2t their toddler stuff isn't as nice, we mainly just have pjs from them.

I never find great stuff at my consignment shops, but in general I like Gymboree, children's place, and baby gap.  I agree sometimes you can get the clothes new from these places for great prices.  I only have a few Janie and jack things since there is none near me and the quality is good but it is expensive so that would be good to buy on consignment.  Oshkosh holds up well too.

My DD is tall and thin so I actually like ON for her too.  I agree gerber is not great, neither is circo brand.   I buy a lot of play clothes and layering stuff at Walmart.  I only buy the garanimals brand bc I think it holds up well with washing.  At $3 or $4 an item you can just buy them new.
