Preemies

Long, narrow head

My DD has a long narrow head like a lot of preemies (from what I can gather it's from the head still forming while in NICU and the head being on one side or the other side for most of that time instead of being suspended in utero in amniotic fluid).  DD's head is still pretty long and narrow and she will be 4 months next week.

She has her 4 month appt on Friday, so I plan on discussing this with pedi.  If pedi blows it off, is this something I should push on to get a referral for a specialist?

If your preemie had a long, narrow head shape, did it go away on its own or did your preemie need some type of band or helmet to help correct?

TIA!

Re: Long, narrow head

  • If you're concerned, push for a referral. One of my boys has plagiocephaly. We first saw the specialist when he was 2 months adjusted and we'll be going back a little before five months adjusted. Here the wait time for the initial appointment is about 6 to 9w so they were thrilled we pushed to get him in so early. They took lots of pictures and scanned his head at the initial appointment and will redo it at the next. I was hopeful the appointments would be over cautious but I'm pretty sure he needs a helmet.
