Cloth Diapering

my first stash

Im super excited.  My DH and I just picked out some CD for our LO.   Im just wondering how many more I should get....

We got 6 BG pocket diapers

4 flips with only 6 inserts and 4 econobum with 15 inserts and 2 snappies.

Also can I use the econobum inserts in the flip diapers?

Any other suggestions on another kind to buy and how many?  The flip CDs are the hook and loop and the BGs are the snap kind.

TIA

Re: my first stash

  • Sounds like an OK stash. Except you will not be able to use them until they are about 10-12 pounds. Which is a while after baby is born.

  • Yes, you can use the econobum inserts in the Flip covers. You do not need any more one size diapers since 6+6+15=27 which is plenty to wash every other day once your baby is big enough to fit into them.

PP is right, though, those diapers will not fit your baby at birth. DD fit into hers around 5-6 weeks, but babies generally fit into them anywhere from 2-10 weeks old.

  • My frist LO was 8.5 lbs when she was born.  Im "guessing" this one will also be bigger.  Would you recommend buying newborns or just using disposables until they have a better fit if that is the case?

All depends on your comfort. Personally DD was 8lbs, I betting DS will be about the same or bigger. I still got a newborn stash to tide us over until OS fits. Since typically it takes about 10-12 weeks.

  • The nice thing about newborn cloth versus newborn sposies is that you can use them for subsequent babies, and they have really great resale value. Most people recoup close to the full cost of the diapers.

  • It's an extra expense, but I find I'm still using my newborn prefolds for other things.  They're great for burp cloths, doublers in pocket diapers, wash cloths, etc.  I'm glad I bought them.

  • You should get a variety of different kinds.  We started out with pockets, tried out AIOs, and eventually figured out that fitteds+wool were our fave.
