We totally over-prepared for Irene & luckily made it through that storm fine, so I guess we've been pretty lax with preparing for Sandy. But the more I watch the Weather Channel, the more I'm getting nervous!
We are filling containers with water & have a few extra gallons on hand. We have enough non-perishables, I think. We have a few flashlights & an alarm clock radio that runs on batteries.
We don't have a generator though, nor does our sump pump have a battery backup, so I'm a little nervous there since we just had all the work done to finish our basement! We've never had water down there, but we've also never lost power for a long period of time. We'll be moving things up off the floor down there & hope for the best.
What are you gals doing to prep?
Re: East coast mamas, are you ready for Sandy?
We're as ready as we could be - I think! Our block had made it through Irene without a problem, but our neighborhood and town had very serious flooding. I'm worried b/c they are calling for a lot more flooding this storm. We have a generator that can run our necessities like the refrigerators for a while, so although they are expecting power outages, I'm not really worried about that. I am worried about the flooding.
Some of the things we've done: food and water supplies (of course), batteries, flashlights, generator, gas, tied up/down all outside furniture & garbage cans and stacked a collection of firewood in the garage (wood is our main heat source anyway, we just don't want tit to be wet). We also will do all the rest of our laundry in the morning in case our power is out for any period of time.
Currently, our town has called a state of Emergency in addition to the State one. Part of our town lies on the barrier island and they have a mandatory evacuation by noon Sunday. The rest of the town has no driving after 11pm Sunday. School is cancelled for Monday and Tuesday and they are strongly considering postponing trick or treating until Friday or Saturday.
I hope everyone stays safe and that this isn't nearly as bad as they are saying. GL everyone!
We are probably just going to fill our bathtub with water, fill some containers with water, and put stuff that's on our deck in the garage. I'm a little worried about the basement, but one time right after we moved in, we got 9 inches of rain in one day, and we were fine...hoping for a repeat performance!
I may go in the basement tomorrow and clean it up...it's pretty crazy down there, and lots of stuff will definitely be ruined if I don't fix it. I'm really hoping we don't lose power. We didn't with Irene...
We have a gas stove, so hopefully will be able to cook some things if the power is out. Also, we have a gas fireplace with a battery backup for heat.
I'm also a little worried about the flooding, too. This will be our first storm in our housewe stayed with friends for Irene bc we were in an apartment.... So it's that whole "fear of the unknown" that's the worst.
I'm fairly certain our entire county is out of D batteries. Everywhere we've been today has been wiped clean! Luckily we have some....I hope were ready!
Ugh. We've got plenty of batteries, candles and food. We also have a gas stove, so we can continue to cook. I am more concerned about the loss of power...with Irene, we were out for 3 days and it was COLD. Not fun with a 10 month old. Since then, MIL & FIL bought a generator, so if we're without power for any significant amount of time, we'll go to their house (20 min away). They are predicting outages from 7-10 days. I really hope they're way off about that!
We also have an old-fashioned plug-in phone. My friend sent it to me after the big blackout a few years ago. Most people use cell phones or portable phones that charge in a base, so once the charge was gone--no phone. No worries with the plug-in.
It's pretty wooded around here, so I worry about the trees crashing down on both the house and our car if we try to head out.
Unfortunately, we recently made a major Costco run and bought TONS of frozen food, so we'll be transferring most of it to MIL's second freezer. We lost so much food with Irene, we're not taking any chances.
Stay safe, ladies!
This time, our pantry is stocked, we bought a few gallons of water and will get a few more tomorrow, we filled both cars, bought disposables since we CD and wouldn't be able to use the washer, bought a few more LED lanterns, wine, and a few other odds and ends. DH will most likely be required to stay at his work if it gets bad so he has a bag packed for that.I'm not looking forward to having all 3 on my own without power, but we'd manage... And they'll be going to bed as soon as it gets dark! We have a gas stove do I can still cook.

I don't think it's going to be too bad in MA. just really windy, so hopefully no trees fall on my car or I will be ripshit. I'm also not looking forward to the commute during the storm. People forget how to drive in normal rain, so I'm figuring everyone will be going 5 miles an hour on the highway and still managing to flip their cars over.
There is a chance we'll lose power since that seems to happen a lot with national grid. This will be my first storm having them as a power supplier, in the past I lived in a town with its own power company and we rarely lost power for more than 5 mins. If we do, we'll just empty our fridge and bring the food over to the in-laws, they have a generator.
I am in Philadelphia, we are fairly ready. I did some food shopping today, purchased items that could be cooked either on the grill or on the stove/oven... weather and power permitting.
Luckily we have gas hot water and stove, so we should be good in that unless something terrible happens to the gas lines.
Food wise we have a lot of snacks and even veggies that if we couldn't cook, would be fine chopped up. We were over prepared for Irene as well, so its hard to say how this storm will go as it appears things keep changing with it.
My main concern is that my Husband works as a police officer and 3rd shift, so I will be home with the kiddo myself, and hope he gets home safe in the morning.
My parents were in Michigan for my cousin's wedding, scheduled to fly home tomorrow. Their flight got canceled so they rented a car and are driving back. They'll get home around 6am tomorrow morning if they drive straight through and the weather cooperates.
Stay safe everyone. Don't take any risks with flooded streets. We'll be rooting for you guys to get throu easy.

We are going to be right, smack in the middle of the b!tch! ugh!
I'm a little nervous for what's to come. We prepared as much as we could and are hoping for the best. The pantry is stocked, bought 3 cases of bottled water, so we're good there. We took all the low lying stuff and packed it in the attic. Filled the car up with gas and packed 3 days worth of clothing and supplies incase we have to evacuate or relocate (already in the car). We're only a few miles away from the shore, but not close enough to have had to be evacuated just yet. Both DH and I's family live in Staten Island and they are no better off than us, so we are staying put and riding it out. The only thing I wish I did was get a generator. DH was telling me to get one months back (after Irene) and I was like "What do we need it for?", well...now would be a good time to have one. Also, thought we had plenty of D batteries for the boom box, but we don't. We went to about 4 stores looking for them and everyone was sold out.
We'll see how this goes doen. To be continued...
