Just wanted to know if there were any other pregnant vegans out there. I have been vegan for four and a half years, and vegetarian for much longer. I am excited about how healthy this lifestyle will be for an embryo/fetus, but wanted to see who else could share this!
Thanks
Re: Any other vegans?
I am! I have been vegan for a little over 2.5 years. I know there are some more on here too. I have been sticking to my vegan diet; however, my prenatals are not
. They have no gelatin but for DHA they do have some fish oils.
I do it for animal rights reasons, but I also love how it has made me feel and knowing that I have given this baby a pretty good start in terms of food and nutrition.
Vegan here! I have been vegan for over a year, and this is my first vegan pregnancy.
For my first, I was vegetarian and then had massive cravings and gave in (regretfully).
I have had much more energy this pregnancy, gained less weight (I gained over 40 last time), my skin looks amazing, no constipation (TMI!), etc etc. So, way to go! Keep it up.

Have either of you encountered anyone who challenged your choice of lifestyle now that you are pregnant? I feel very confident about my choice (VERY), but I know my mother in law will eventually make some comment, and the one friend/coworker I have told (just in case - I am high risk to begin with), is not supportive of the vegan diet.
I read that you truly do need more protein while pregnant (otherwise, who doesn't get enough protein anyway??), so I tried tracking my macronutrients on a website to make sure I would not have to make any major alterations to my diet once I reach the second trimester. So far, I seem to get more than what I need - I read that it is the normal 0.4 g per pound of body weight, plus 25 once you hit the second trimester. To be safe, I rounded up to about 68 grams for me, and I have easily surpassed that every day!
I know my mother and MIL do not agree with my lifestyle, but they have kept their opinions to themselves for the most part. One of DH's friends/a neighbor who is in medical school with DH has disagreed quite openly with my diet, and has gone as far to try to "scientifically" prove his case. I just shrug it off, for the most part.
I also track my food intake on myfitnesspal.com and easily exceed 70g/day of protein. I also almost always exceed Iron and clacium needs on diet alone. I bought Vegan for Life and Your Vegan Pregnancy; both have been great resources!
In regards to DHA supplements that another poster mentioned--I take a vegan brand, DEVA.

I am also vegan! Ive been a vegetarian for 12 years. Just decided about 5 months Ago to give up dairy and eggs. Was going to consider trying to eat some fish but I just don't see it happening being that it makes me nauseous. I also purchased a vegan pregnancy book and I am making an effort to make sure I am getting enough of what I need. Eating more leafy greens and adding wheat germ and molasses to my foods. I'm going to discuss with my dr at my first visit.
My hope is to raise the child as vegetarian/vegan as possible. There are a lot of great books on the subject, and I hope to purchase them as I progress through the pregnancy, but to be safe, am waiting until I make it into a safer phase (after my CVS test - I am high risk because of balanced chromosome translocation). My husband is not vegan, or vegetarian, but very health conscious, and now eats very little meat/fish and not much dairy. However, I know it is just moments until this topic is brought up by my mother in law, and I am trying to figure out what I will say to her when she asks.
The idea of having to make meat or non-vegan meals bothers me, and I won't do it. I want my child to be healthy but I do not want him/her to feel so restricted and rebel, so I want to make sure I educate him/her on health regardless. What are your thoughts? Anyone likely to challenge your decisions?
