Tantrum resulted in first serious injury

We had our first major childhood injury last night. Asher was having a fit and he threw his whole body back and smashed his head on the hardwood floor. He was knocked unconscious for like 30sec to a minute, but it felt like FOREVER. We picked him up and he opened his eyes and threw up everywhere. Then he held his head and screamed. I took him to the ER and he got there and screamed until he was seen. They had to sedate him to examine him. He has a huge egg on his head, but his eyes are dilating correctly, he has no swelling around the egg, his speech is normal and after they gave him Ibuprophen he stopped screaming and crying. The sedation wore off and he was back to his chipper self. They couldn't decide if they wanted to do a CT scan, so we had a neuro consult and we were told to wake him up every two hours, bring him back in if he throws up again, he eyes become unfocused or unevenly dilated, or he has more swelling or bruising.   He was sent home this morning and we followed up with our regular pedi this afternoon.  He was diagnosed with concussion :(  I don't know what to do about some of the whole body tantrums.  Ugh.

  • Oh my word, that must've been absolutely terrifying! I'm so glad Asher is okay!

My H gets a lot less emotional than I do.  When he was screaming and holding his head, I was terrified!  I could barely get dressed and out of the door.

  • Thomas is a big deal in this house.  My wallet agrees with that statement :)

  • 1. P is obsessed with Thomas too, and it's crazy expensive!!

    2. I probably would have puked too.  I'm sure it was terrifying!  =(  No advice because we are dealing with hardcore tantrums here as well, but she doesn't usually throw herself around, although she's had serious injuries from just her clumsiness.  Hugs.

  • Oh, AB. How scary for all of you!

I'm glad it was "just" a concussion, but man, what an ordeal. I'm so sorry!

  • I have no help to offer, just hugs and sympathy. My DS got a fractured elbow and 5 weeks in a cast thanks to a tantrum :
  • It's usually the other way around here; we are the ones injured.  I'm sorry he got hurt.  I would have had the same reaction!
