Apple tv vs blu ray player?

My IL's aren't local and don't see H often, so they typically buy him a larger Christmas present each year.  We don't (and haven't had for the past year or two) have cable, so my H was thinking about asking for Apple TV or a Blu Ray player.

Anyone have either of these?

What he'd like to do is have access to Netflix and HuluPlus on whatever system we have, so that he can disconnect his laptop from the tv and we can actually use it as a laptop, and not the way we access Netflix and Hulu on our tv.

What are the pros/cons?

(We don't buy any movies for home use, other than kids dvds for DS, so the blu-ray player part isn't a huge draw.  We only rent from redbox maybe once every month or two.)

Re: Apple tv vs blu ray player?

  • Have you looked into a Roku player? You can stream with that.

A blu ray player would also obviously give you more use if you want to watch blu ray discs.

I don't know anything about Apple TV.

  • Tell me more about this roku.  What does it do differently/the same than the others?

  • The Roku is, in a sense, like the blu ray except obviously it doesn't play any DVD's you can download "channels" like netflix and hulu and it comes with some preloaded it runs through your wifi. We have a roku in our bedroom.

In our living room we have a blu ray which has the "channels" netflix, hulu etc and obviously watches blu ray and non blu ray DVD's. TBH I don't see a difference between blu ray and non...

  • If you have a lot of movies and such on your comp with iTunes then I would get the Apple TV. With the Apple TV it just synces with your library, but also has channels like Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube. My Dad has one of the original ones and it is pretty awesome.

  • I can't remember the draw backs Of apple tv but my dh went with a Sony box instead of the apple. This does have a DVD player plus netflix and stuff. Sorry I don't know more but it one other option.
  • I vote roku. Easy to use. More "channels" to download. Half the price.

  • We have Apple TV and I love it, especially for Netflix. All the movies are already there, and you can buy movies on iTunes instead of worrying about actual discs like with Blu ray. It's really nice of you have or are planning to have subscriptions to streaming services.
