Questions for BTDT moms.

Dd doesn't sleep through the night anymore. It's been about two weeks.  She is having nightmares about squirrels.  It takes an hour usually to get her back to sleep, one night in three her screaming will wake up DS who thinks its time to get up and then it takes a while to get him down.  I of course am then wide awake at 2AM.

She had nightmares once before and the doctor told me she was over tired and to make her nap so I do most days.   If she doesn't nap she is a monster and she manages to pass out around 8pm at night with or without it.

I am exhausted.  Any thoughts on helping a 3 year old with a recurring rodent nightmare?

  • I agree with the book idea. My DD had nightmares about Grover, she said he was growling at her. We had a Grover puppet that we threw away and we told her that DH told Grover to leave her alone and let her sleep and have sweet dreams. It seemed to work. Can you tell her that you told all of the squirrels to leave her alone? They are still so young that the smallest things scare them.

  • This is going to sound really dumb, but when she wakes up from her nightmares have you tried getting her to go to the bathroom?

No.  But I am not above trying something that sounds dumb because hey often it's the seemingly dumb things that work.

  • It's probably just an old wives tail but my mom suggested it when E was having problems with nightmares. She did it with my brother and I and it worked and it worked for E. We also don't let him drink anything within an hour of bedtime but that's also because he was coming in our bathroom to pee and waking me up.
