Freaking out: Evacuation :(

well, it looks like we are going to have to evacuate tomorrow.  We basically live on an island (with small bridges connecting to land) next to a big river.   I am freaking out.

Last year during Irene my car was totalled because we were on vacation and no one moved it.  The water was about 3 feet high but luckily none got INSIDE my home.  Other houses around me got it pretty bad.

Its going to be insane to pack us, the dogs, the babies, the rabbits and the breastmilk (lol) up and go.  They are saying to prepare for a week!   What would you pack for your babies to keep them/ you sane?  (besides the obvious like diapers, wipes and bottles)

Sidenote:  I am so pissed at DH because he is insisting that we go to his friends Halloween party tonight 40 minutes away when this Hurricane is coming and we need to prepare.  We got in a huge fight over it.

Re: Freaking out: Evacuation :(

  • I'm sorry to hear that you have to evacuate. I would bring whatever keeps LO entertained the most/longest. She loves her baby gym a lot and it folds up for travel. I would definitely bring that and probably her bouncy seat.

  • Wow I would be super pissed at DH too.

I would make sure to pack some toys for LO if you can fit them so he has some stuff to play with. GL to you guys!!

Oh and if your LO is anything like mine, bring TONS of burb cloths. And I second the bouncy seat idea if your LO is a fan, mine looooves hers and we bring it everywhere.

  • I'd honestly probably dismantle and bring the swing and the K'Tan.

Do NOT wait to evacuate. As someone who lives in a very hurricane prone area, waiting only prolongs your time on the road and increases your chance of running out of gas. Also, according to my Severe & Unusual Weather GA from college (he is a friend and I went to Univ of Okla, which has the best meteorology program in the country), the rain and whatnot will be really bad tomorrow evening because the leading edge of storms that hit the east coast is the worst part.

  • Wow, send your H and you stay home, that's what I'd do. I'd take the pnp, bouncy seat or bumbo, some toys, clothes, etc. Good luck!!!

  • Oh my gosh, I would be freaking out too!! Where are you guys going to go for the week?

  • Be safe!  How big is your car, and I agree that your DH is crazy for wanting to go to a halloween party tonight.

we are debating between my in-laws and my brother's house.  my brother has a generator luckily.  IL's have a crib though.  but we will bring our RNP's.  They are still sleeping in them.

DH wants me to go to the party so he can drink.  This is absolutely ridiculous, i don't want to go, but he will fly off the handle that "he never gets to see his friends".  He has been so crazy lately.

  • Are there lots of people also evacuating where you live? If you wait too long, you'll be stuck in traffic depending on how many other people have to leave. I would go ahead and go tonight.

  • This is what my Severe & Unusual Weather (who lives on the east coast) had to say in his latest update:

Anyone along the Bayshore in not-even-really-coastal-flood-prone-areas - GET OUT!!!!

The record flooding of Hurricane Donna and the December 1992 storm is 10.1 feet. Irene came close at 9.8 feet above normal. This is forecast to be 11.5 feet above normal. Putting this into perspective, think of Usain Bolt breaking the 100 m record by running an 8.5 instead of his pedestrian 9.5.
