Cloth Diapering

If you could get huggies for free and had no cd stash, would you still CD?

Apparently there is a thing at DH's work where one can get free Huggies.  With no experience, my main reason for wanting to cd is environmental right now, but he's swayed by savings.  I have started building my stash, but don't have too many yet.  Should we just give in?

  • I would not hesitate to take advantage of free diapers, disposable or not!  You may find you prefer them for overnights, outings and laundry day until you get the hang of full-time CDing.

ETA: I would still recommend CDing over disposables. I guess I didn't know what you meant by "give in." I like cloth way better than disposables for a number of reasons.  But it doesn't hurt to use free disposables as a back up until you complete your stash.

  • Since we cloth diaper because of the cost savings- yes I would go with the huggies.  And that is crazy you can get free diapers... and I would only go that route if we were guaranteed until the potty training days.

I guess it really depends on your reasons for wanting to cloth diaper.  It's not hard, and I love it... but it would save me time to not have to wash, etc.

  • Maybe take advantage through the newborn phase? We used disposables then and it was fine, much less work for me as I was getting used to being a mom.

  • Well, by "give in" I mean to let him have his way and go with disposables.  His mom used them and thinks cding is crazy, so he is afraid.  My mother can't imagine using disposables so she's really on board.  I do think we will use mostly disposables for our newborn stage as we were both fast growers and maybe will have a big baby soon after she's born, and I don't want us to outgrow a whole set in 3 weeks.  But I do have a few cute cloth ones I want to try then, and if I can resist buying more that will be enough to clue us in about what we want to do when we can use bigger diapers... Thanks all, and I'm still happy to hear more opinions.
  • I would definitely go for free disposables! We use them overnight, for daycare one day a week, and for the church nursery on Sundays. But I'd still opt for CD's also because of the environmental and financial benefits.

  • Nope. I wouldn't use the disposables. I would take them and donate though.

We originally decided to CD because of savings and 11 weeks ago I might have said yes to free disposables. Now that I am hearing stories on my birth month board about blowouts so bad you cut the onesie off and rashes I would never do disposables. I have never had a blowout or a hint of rash. Nothing smells like dirty diapers in my house, my daughters diaper gets to match her outfit, I'm not hurting the environment, and as my DH says, what a lucky little girl to have the softest diapers in the world!

  • I'm in the "no, take them and donate or use in emergency" group. We used disposables we got at my shower. They were size 2's so we had used CDs and gotten used to them by the time she fit in the sposies. Well she had 2 blowouts in 2 weeks (none ever in CDs), an uncontrollable rash and would wake up screaming everytime she had even the smallest pee. I know that's not everybodys experience with sposies or nobody would use them, but that being my experience I'm trying hard to not have to use them again. We even bring CDs when we travel home to see family who live far away.

Also I just hate the smell. To me the chemicals mixed with poop make me gag.

This exactly, we have NEVER had a poo explosion with cloth diapers.   We are cloth diapering for numerous reasons, chemicals in the disposables, smell of disposables, cost savings, environmental reasons (poop in the landfill grosses me out) but honestly, I would be hard pressed to pass on free diapers.  I would still take them, save some for backup and donate the rest.

  • I would take them.  I am sure there will be times when you will want them for back up even if you do CD.  I know we at going on vacation to Mexico for a week and will be using sposies.

  • We used disposables until DS was about 9 months and we still use disposables for when we're out and about. Of course I would take the diapers, BUT Huggies SUCKED for us. Pampers were the only diaper that contained anything BUT it had to be a certain kind so it didn't give him a chemical rash. Long story short, CDs are very much worth it for us.

  • As someone else mentioned, why not just use them for the newborn stage?  That way you can just start with one-size when your LO is big enough.

  • I am using the Huggies Natural for the newborn stage. I will use cloth when she gets big enough for them to fit well.

  • No, but we didn't cloth diaper for the money. Also, my daughter was super irritated by disposables the few times she had to wear them.
  • No. I have no interest in putting toxic chemicals next to my kid's nether region for 2+ years straight.

  • Put me in the "no" camp. CDing isn't about the money for me. It's about the health and environmental issues.

    This almost EXACTLY.

And FTR, we've had rashes in Pampers AND cloth, and one blowout in each Pampers and cloth. ;)

As for taking them and donating them... I'm all for donating to moms in need and shelters (in fact, I run a drive through my church for a local crisis pregnancy center) but I don't feel great about this idea. Nice in theory, but it wasn't what the program was intended for and I'd hate to think that it could/would be seen as "abuse" of the system and cause a problem for other families who really do need them.
