Repost from 2nd Tri: WWYD? Bedroom arrangement

We have a three bedroom house so currently DS#1 and DD have their own room. We are trying to figure out how to handle bedrooms once DS#2 arrives in Feb. When DS #2 arrives, DS#1 will be 3.5 yoa and DD will be a few weeks shy of her 2nd birthday. At some point, we will have the two boys sharing the room that DS#1 is currently in (it's a much larger room than the other bedroom). So, here are the options:

Option 1: Move DD in with DS#1 prior to the baby arriving so the baby can have the small bedroom to himself. When DS#2 is 18-24 mos he would move in with DS#1 and DD would move back to a room of her own.

Option 2: Keep DS#1 and DD in their current rooms and keep the baby in our room or in the family room/dining room until he is sleeping through the night and then put him in the room with DS#1 in the crib, moving him to a bed when he is ready.

So WWYD? Any other options that I haven't thought about?

Re: Repost from 2nd Tri: WWYD? Bedroom arrangement

  • I'd put all the kids in the big bedroom to sleep (though I'd keep the baby in with me until he was sleeping through the night) and I'd make the small bedroom a playroom. I'd keep it that way until gender starts to matter (age 8-9 I think). But I shared a room with my brother for ages so my opinion may be skewed.

So with that option off the table, I'd put baby's stuff in with DS1 and then plan to keep baby sleeping with me until he's sleeping through the night. That way DS1 gets used to sharing his space without actually having to share anything for a while.

  • I only have one child, so take this with a grain of salt, but in my opinion, it sounds like a better idea to keep the baby in your room until you move him into DS#1's room. Moving your DD twice sounds awful.

  • We have a boy and a girl, each with their own room.  We go back and forth about having a 3rd, but if we did, we'd have the baby share a room with the child of the same gender.  So, I'd go with option #2.

  • I only have 1 child and never shared a room, but I would have the two boys share a room. We had a 4 bedroom house growing up so my brothers never had to share a room, but if we went somewhere they were always the ones to share.

  • I'd probably do option 2 until I was ready to rearrange all the bedrooms.

  • Option 2.

We kept DS in our room in the first 6 months & it worked fine.

  • Option 2.  We kept DD2 in our room until she was 6 months (she started sleeping thru the night at 4 wks, but I like to keep them near me for a while) and then moved her in with DD1.

  • We have 2 bdrms in our house, so we plan on having DS and DD share a room. Right now I'm still nursing DD, so she sleeps in the same room as us. After she turns 1, I'll stop nursing and as soon as she's on the same sleep schedule, we'll put her in DS room. She's not currently sleeping through the night,so it's just easier to have her in the room with us till she is.

  • We have the same issue really.  We have a two bedroom house and use a study downstairs as a nursery for DS currently.  When baby #3 arrives DD and DS will share a room and the new baby will go into the study/nursery at about 3-4 months.  Eventually they'll all share the one bedroom and the study will become a dedicated playroom.  Someday we'll sell and buy a bigger house!
