Braxton Hicks

How many a day is too many?  I  meant to bring this up with my OB last week, and I forgot.  They aren't painful, but they sort take my breath away sometimes.

Re: Braxton Hicks

  • I have no idea. Could you call your OB's office to ask them to ask for you?

  • I've always been told not to worry about them unless you have cramping with them and/or spotting.  It's not the number you're having that is important.

Throughout my pregnancies I've had BH that are regular and timeable, but they aren't exactly painful (just extremely uncomfortable), so my MWs tell me not to worry about them.

If you're having a lot you could be dehydrated, so make sure to push the fluids.  If that still doesn't help try lying down on the couch and as a last resort take a warm bath.  One of those three things usually makes mine go away.

  • My OB said that more than 6 in an hour for two hours straight at this point in pregnancy, 23 weeks, and she would send me to L&D for a check to find out what is going on.

  • My OB says 6 in an hour to call. I haven't had that yet, so I don't know what he would do, but I suspect they would send me to L&D to get checked (or into the office if it were during business hours).

  • I was in L&D for contractions last week, and they said 6 or more painful contractions in an hour is cause for concern, but BH shouldn't be painful. Have you tried drinking LOTS of water and then laying down for a bit? That might help

  • If I am having a lot, I do drink plenty of water and lay down, which generally helps.   I guess I am slightly concerned because I didn't have nearly this many with DD.  I guess I am having them because I am chasing her around!  I didn't know as many as 6 was ok!  That's good, I thought it was less than that, which I do sometimes have.

They get worse with each baby.  I was having BH this time around by like 15 weeks.  My uterus is just tired.  lol

But as PP said, you only need to worry about 6 painful contractions in an hour.  You may get more than 6 BH contractions in an hour and be fine.  But as long as you're not spotting or cramping with them, you're fine.  I went an entire month with #2 having BH contractions every 7-10 minutes throughout the day.  They were extremely uncomfortable, but very different from real contractions.

  • I called about this today...I was told if I have more than 4 an hour that last 2 minutes or more to call them ASAP and go to labor and delivery.

  • That was another thing, they are sometimes last a very long amount of time it seems.

And I guess I get a bit concerned, because although DD was a csection, I was 6 cms before.  I remember being incredibly crampy, but I really can't pintpoint painful contractions.

  • Mine started at 24 weeks with C, then 21 weeks with F and I think with this one it was like 18 weeks or something. If they become painful AT ALL or last for an extended time then start to pay attention to them.

Mine are usually related to being dehydrated. Lying down isn't an option for me during the day when I work, or on flights (I have been traveling 1 time per week argh). So if you can't lie down, I try to keep my feet elevated as high as possible. At my desk I have a couple of boxes that I keep my lets up on. On a flight, I try to at least keep it elevated on my computer bag.

Hope that helps. Don't be afraid to call your doctor. With C, i called my doctor when I had 6 or so an hour. She told me to go home and lie down. I immediately started crying and my boss thought I was losing it (I am not a very outwardly emotional person).
