Wiping gums?

I was looking online for a pediatric dentist for DD yesterday. Each website I saw recommended wiping LOs gums off with a soft washcloth after eating. I had never heard this, and just thought you were supposed to start wiping/brusing when the first tooth popped out. Anyone wiping the gums? Does your LO tolerate ok?

Re: Wiping gums?

  • I actually just started wiping DD's gums because I read it promotes good oral health early. I also bought this teether that's made to gently "brush" DD's gums when she chews on it. She seems just fine when I wipe her gums, no fussing at all!

  • I do but it's more because of my toddler (it's part of bedtime and he would question why he has to brush and she doesn't).  She just takes the washcloth and bites and sucks on it anyway.

  • My doctor said you can start wiping gums right away. It promotes good oral health and already reduces any plaque build up before the first tooth erupts.

That being said, we haven't really been consistently doing it. I think we'll probably start in the next couple of days.

  • Not after eating (he still eats like every 2 hours), but we sometimes wipe his gums down in the tub. Not consistently though. Mostly he just sucks on the washcloth- I swear it's his favourite thing to suck on next to the boob.

I think he's going to get one of those baby's first toothbrush things in his Christmas stocking, provided he doesn't get any teeth before then that is!

LOL, I think we'll give it a shot tonight. DD already puts everything in her mouth anyway, so I guess she won't mind a wet washcloth : )

Our doctor recommended it as well.  He likes chewing on wash cloths, so once and awhile.
