How long til your milk dries up?

Mobile How long til your milk dries up?

DS is self weaning. I am really upset because I didn't think they could self wean before 2. He hasn't asked to nurse for over two days and before that he would nurse once a day for 5 minutes at the absolute most. Is this really the end or could he start nursing again?
I'm afraid that he may eventually want to nurse again but I'll be dried up. I can't pump because my breast don't respond to it anymore.

Sorry, I know I ask a lot about BFIng but this truly has me sad. frown

  • It's definitely not true that they can't self-wean before 2. Mine self-weaned starting around 9 months. She screamed and cried and pushed me away every time I tried to nurse. I kept at it for another month (she would be more receptive some times, like in the AM, than others, but less and less over time, and by 10 months she refused any nursing), but meanwhile my supply went way down, eventually to where I was only getting about an ounce per pumping session. At that point I gave up, both on pumping and on trying to convince her to nurse. She never tried to nurse or anything after we stopped. She was just ready to stop.

Sorry if that's not encouraging. I'm sure all kids-- and all boobs-- are different. You might be better at retaining a supply than I was.

Thank you for being honest! I'm hoping that if he weans, he doesn't want it again. that's what I'm most afraid of,  is that he'll want it after my milk is all gone.
  • Matt wean himself at 7 months. I was already giving him formula since his 6th month cuz my supply wasn't enought for him but I nursed him in the mornings and nights. One morning I picked him up and when I put him to nurse he just gagged... /Baby, that can hurt momma's feelings/. I tried a couple of times and the next day and he just kept on gagging. H find it funny when I only kept thinking that I disgusted my baby :sigh:. He didn't wanted anymore after that...

  • I don't mean this to sound snarky, so please forgive me if it reads that way, but have you been offering to nurse?  Don't offer, don't refuse is actually a method of weaning. I still offer in the morning and at night and let him nurse when he asks otherwise. Good luck!

    Not snarky at all!Smile
I actually have offered but he has no interest. I have not tried very hard though because I was afraid if I "made" him nurse he would reject nursing even more. I "sign" for milk and he signs back then comes over, takes one suck then wants off Sad

  • Then I have no advice, but hopefully he will change his mind and start to nurse again soon!
