Baby Names

would appreciate your opinion

We won't know for sure until next week if we are having a boy or a girl, but we have a girl first name picked that we both agree on-Ruthie.  Both of our deceased grandmothers were named Ruth and I've always liked the name Ruthie.

We've had a couple ideas for a middle name, but nothing we can really agree on.  I wanted to have a 3 syllable middle name because our last name is one syllable, but i've recently started thinking about "Vera" for a middle name.  I know its kind of old sounding but an important grandmother type figure named Vera passed away recently and I thought it might be a nice way to honor her.  My husband didn't sound thrilled when I suggested it, but I'm sure he would be fine with it if I really wanted it.  I'm not sure though.

Does Ruthie Vera sound ok together even though they are both 2 syllables? Is it too much to have two old sounding names together.

Re: would appreciate your opinion

  • Why not Ruth Vera? You can still call her Ruthie all the time, but it solves the 2-2 issue and Ruth would fit an adult better than Ruthie.

  • I agree that Ruth fits an adult better than Ruthie, but I don't really like the flow of Ruth Vera. Sorry.

  • I like the name Ruth with the NN Ruthie. I also think you should choose a more feminine middle name with more syllables. For example, Ruth Elizabeth or Ruth Alexandra sounds/flows better to me.

    I agree with this.

  • Ruthie doesn't age well. Ruth Vera is lovely and you can still use Ruthie as a nn.

  • Ruth Vera is nice, or how about Ruth Valerie if you want kind of the same sound with more syllables?

  • Agreed.  I don't like any of those names.
  • DD is Vera Rue so Vera Ruth sounds better to me :) I also like Ruth Vera but not Ruthie.

  • I agree with PPs about using Ruth with the NN Ruthie. I LOVE Vera, but I don't like it with Ruth/Ruthie.

     How about:

    Ruth Catherine
    Ruth Eliza
    Ruth Elizabeth
    Ruth Amelie

  • Thanks for the honest opinions. Our dilemma is that our last name is Smith. I did not think Ruth Smith sounded right together with the double TH sound. Does it sound better than I think it does? Ruth Smith? I just didn't think it flowed well and really liked the name Ruth so we thought we would go with Ruthie instead. I don't really see the problem with an adult having the name of Ruthie.  I feel like i've read books or seen movies with adult characters named Ruthie and that it did not seem like a silly or childish name.  Oh well, we still have plenty of time to think about it...baby might even end up being a boy.  I just know how indecisive I can be and wanted to start getting some possible names. I mainly just wanted to know if Ruthie Vera flowed well together, but I guess it doesn't really.
  • Ruth Vera for her name and Ruthie for a nickname. The best of both worlds :)

  • What about Ruthanne? It sounds good with your last name, can still use Ruthie as a NN (although I agree that Ruthie could work just fine as an adult name- and if she doesn't like it, she can shorten it to Ruth), and Vera sounds good as a MN with it.

  • I'm very sensitive to the sound issue, and I think Ruth Smith sounds fine.

  • I don't think Ruth Smith sounds bad at all. I am also really big on having names with meaning, so I would go with Ruth Vera since it means so much to you. DS's name comes from both of DH's grandfathers who were highly decorated in the military: Michael Samuel. I'm not a fan of both names together and tried to save one name for LO #2, but DH wasn't having it. (Actually, I really wasn't a fan of either name to begin with, so we call him Mickey, which I love.) I decided that it meant a lot to DH to name is son after his grandfathers, and honestly, how often do we say the two names together?

  • I love the Ruthanne idea someone had! Ruthanne sounds better than Ruth with Smith and you can still call her Ruthie!
    Ruthanne Marie?
For some reason I like the sound of a second name that ends in the long E sound with that first name.

  • I think Vera Ruth sounds better than Ruth Vera.

Ruthie Smith does sound better than Ruth Smith, but I would not go with Vera for MN then
