Moms of boys- wiping question

-Do you wipe when they pee?

His circumcision has healed up nicely now, so I have stopped putting A&D/gauze on him... But I don't feel comfortable wiping it yet. Then I got to thinking, are you even supposed to? I mean, men don't- right? I feel like little girl diaper changes are so much easier, haha... I always wiped her when she went pee, should I do the same for him? I feel so silly for asking this...

Re: Moms of boys- wiping question

  • I don't know if you are "supposed" to or not, but I always did with DS.  I used a wipe at first, but eventually as he got older I only wiped when he had a BM.  I can't remember when exactly I stopped...maybe around 6 months.  Totally guessing there.

  • I usually wipe him after he pees, not as much now seeing as he is older but I was careful when I did it when he was just circ'd.

I am FTM but I assume yes b/c the wet diaper still sits on it. That being said I absolutely love your sig pic. Holy adorable!

  • DS1 is 2 1/2 and I still do.. I suppose it's b/c he's sitting in a wet diaper. Once he's potty trained (hopefully soon!) I won't. I guess I never considered not doing it...

  • When DS wore/wears diapers, yes. He's 2.5 now, and potty training, so now he only wears diapers during naptime and bedtime.

But my thought is that the pee soaks into the diaper, and is left in contact with his skin, until said diaper is changed. So, I wipe the area that was touched by the pee soaked diaper. Way easier to clean boys than girls... DD has all those crevices for everything to get into!

Now that we're potty training, I don't wipe after he pees unless he pees in his underwear, then I wipe his area and down the legs.

Um... we're still working on not pooping in our underwear. And by "we," I mean "he." Sometimes he holds it until he gets in a diaper. Sometimes he just dirties his underwear. We've only successfully pooped in the toilet twice in about two months.
  • Ok- I know that sounded like a silly question, I just remember on my other BMB some ladies would wipe their LOs (DD or DS-) and some wouldn't. I was always in the wiping camp....

I just wasn't sure what to do when it came to little boys, and I didn't have a chance to come across this issue until today.

    Thanks for the input!

  • With ds1 we read numerous articles saying you shouldn't use wipes on pee only diapers. So we didn't. And we don't on ds2. I can't find the articles, of course! But the reasoning was because with the amount of pee diapers a day, it'll rub their delicate skin raw.

  • I don't. Maybe we did when he was an infant? Can't remember. Will have to see what seems right when this one is born. He's never had any skin irritation, rash, etc. as a result of pee and his skin is typically dry when I change him with just a pee diaper. Will have to think on it and ask ped next time if I remember.

I have nothing productive to add, I just wanted to tell you how beautiful your siggy pic is!  What a priceless moment you were able to capture of big sister meeting little brother!

    Thank you Smile

I have a series of 3 pictures of her meeting him... This the first one, the surprised look. The second one, shes looking over her shoulder smiling and grabbing for him- and the third one, shes poking him in the eye haha. Im going to blow them up, I just love them!

With DS his pediatrician actually recommended that we not wipe him unless he had a BM.  He said that when you wipe him with just pee diapers it takes away their natural oils leading to more diaper rash.  I followed his directions and in 2 years of diaper changes DS only had diaper rash one time and it was on his bottom from bad diarrhea.

  • I really don't have an answer for wiping little boys, but my husband wipes his bits after he pees. When I asked him once, he said his mom always made them when they were potty training and he has just always done it.

  • With DS after the gauze phase, I would use a damp, warm washcloth when changing a pee diaper for 23 wks.
Also my pediatrician recommended pulling down the remaining skin tmi I know to make sure it didn't become infected if I remember correctly...you may notice some diaper lint in there and I wanted to make sure it stated clean.

Maybe it was our pedi as well. Who knows! But yeah, we also only had one bad rash. It was also from diarrhea. He got inflamed a few times, but what kid doesn't?

And no, he didn't stink like pee. In case you were wondering.

  • I read for boys it's best to only wipe after a BM as the wipes can leave the area more prone to irritation, though it's totally your call as you know his skin sensitivity best!

  • I still always wipe A, I never thought not too.  He was not circ'd though so maybe that's why I didn't give it any pause.

This. At some point we just stopped, but I made sure to pull the skin back and clean under there during baths.

  • I don't remember if we wiped in the beginning for just a wet/pee diaper but I haven't in a really long time if I ever did.  We rarely have diaper rash and that's only if he has an irritating BM.  I figure urine is sterile and his skin isn't really wet when I change the diaper.  Works for us.  Unless you're using just a washcloth with water you're just adding chemicals to his skin from the wipes, right?
