Les Mills Body Pump while Pregnant?

I've been taking Body Pump classes for about a year, and I'm planning on continuing for now.  But, I'm wondering if there are specific moves that I shouldn't be doing.  Like I'm guessing that I shouldn't do the abs sets... but anything else?  I will ask my doctor, but I probably won't get to his office until after my class this week.  Anyone have any tips?  Thanks!

  • You're so early in your pregnancy that you are probably safe continuing everything you're doing (unless you feel some discomfort).  I still do ab work at an incline or on a ball.  I don't believe you have to avoid lying on your back until your second trimester (at least that is what my doctor told me).  I'd just do the class like you normally do and confirm with your doctor later in the week.

  • I wouldnt lift as much. also on the clean and presses I wouldnt use heavy weights, same with the lunges and squats. I wouldnt go super heavy. now you are ok to lay on your back. Abs are fine now too.
Once you hit the 2nd trimester avoid laying on your back for like chest and abs.

Do the exercises on a ball and you can use dumbells and modify.

I would let the instructor know so she can instruct you.

    congrats and good luck!

  • You just need to watch how much you lift. When you lift to heavy, or too many repetitions blood is diverted from your uterus (baby) to those muscles you are working. Ab exercises are fine- you will need to modify around your second trimester so you aren't flat on your back by using a ball  or something. When you get towards the end, when your stomach muscles are really being stretched, you can actually give yourself diastis recti- or make it worse if you already have it. So, don't do crunches especially in the later part. Also, in your 3rd trimester when relaxin starts to kick in, be aware that your joints start to become very loose. Watch how deep you squat, how low your chest press goes, etc. I am a trainer and have exercised all the way up till the day before I went into labor with all 3 of mine. It is doable, and I believe helped me stay healthy and have good labors. You will just need to modify things along the way. :)
  • Thank you!  That was all so helpful!  Smile

  • As you get bigger you'll probably have to avoid the clean and press, if you can, do the presses at an incline and ab work on a ball.

  • I did BP regularly until just a few weeks ago (travel!). I didn't make any modifications to my weights or exercises - just went a tad slower and drank a LOT more water.
