Waking up for feedings

So my doctor advised me that since my LO is almost back up to his birth weight (he's a week today), we can let him feed whenever he wants. However, she advised that if we want him to sleep longer at night, to wake him up every 2-3 hours during the day for a feed. My question is, is if he wakes up and feeds for about 15 minutes, but is still falling asleep during that feeding, is that really "waking" him up? Or does he need to be fully alert? He will still feed with his eyes closed and burp and everything, but then goes right back down to sleep.

Re: Waking up for feedings

  • It's more about him eating and getting most of his calories in during the day so he doesn't need to eat as much as night, not so much about whether he's actually awake or not.  He'll start to have longer awake periods as the weeks go on.  At one week old, you should expect him to be sleeping a ton.

Exactly this. At that age, there is very little alert time. As long as he's getting his feeds in during the day, you should be able to space it out a bit more at night.

This is my siggy. Love it.
