Working Moms

Oh, My God. What is wrong with people?

Don't know how many of you saw the story about the nanny who is being accused of murdering two of her "charges" yesterday, but I read the story (wish I hadn't) and worse, the comments, in which the first reaction was "this is why send my kids to daycare" or --brace yourself--"this is what happens when moms embrace the unnatural choice of leaving their kids with other people to selfishly go off to your careers."  This poor couple's children are DEAD and people are ripping them apart for having jobs (or a nanny, regardless of job status).  How can people be that incredibly cruel (the killer and the people bashing the parents a day after their kids have been murdered?!)?  They are collectively the devil on earth.  I am literally holding back tears at work for this poor family.  Let's all keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

  • An excellent reason to not read the comment section on a story like this.

Stupid gets inflated exponentially when exposed to the anonymousness of the internet.

  • OMG, heartbreaking story.  I couldn't believe it.

I hate when people twist news stories around to suit their own beliefs.  Not every WM aspires to be a SAHM.  It's just not for everyone, whether there are financial reasons or whatever.  I hate the judgment, going both ways.  Some of my SAHM friends lost their jobs and really can't afford to stay home, but they can't find jobs that will pay enough to cover daycare and still have a reasonable amount left over to contribute to the huosehold - why bother at that point?

There's more than one way to parent.  Women should be more supportive of each other, we're all moms here, there's no need to tear each other down - particularly using this story.  "If she just stayed at home, her kids would be alive" is a heartless point of view, this woman lost two of her children, not a pair of shoes.  Gross.

  • What heart breaking story.  People are dumb I try not to read the comments sections.
  • The nutty thing about it is that almost all child abuse cases are THE PARENTS. So for majority of kids abused, it really wouldn't matter stastically if the parents stay at home or work outside the home.

I never read the comments to stories because those are the craziest and extremist people of all that comment. They see things as only black and white not knowing that there's a gray area.

    Horrible story, how sad.

  • that story is incredibly sad and the comments are ridiculous. I would have never harmed a child in my care when I was a nanny and the parents that I worked for went to great lengths to make sure that background checks were completed, references were checked, etc.  Having to go to work does not make someone a bad parent!

  • It makes me mad that people will take such a horrible tragedy and turn it into an attack on working mothers.  So I was relieved to read not only this moving column in the Huffington Post, but also the final paragraph:

"We will be moderating these comments strictly. Perhaps there is a time for a debate about child care and working mothers, but this certainly is not it. Right now, compassion."

  • People are such hateful @ssholes. How mean. And ignorant. "Selfishly go off to your careers"?! Really? Where do they think the money is going to come from to provide food, clothing, and shelter for children? Gee, how selfish. Cruel idiots.

  • Way late to the party, I know, but the really sad/ironic thing about those judgy comments? The mom in this case is a SAHM. She doesn't currently work. But of course they assume to make the story fit their little head pockets about the world and who is 'safe' and who is a bad mom, etc. etc.

  • Not to add fuel to the fire, but with the attack on working moms, and we "leave our children in the hands of strangers" what about the mom of 5 children who drowned them all in the bathtub?  Maybe if she got out of the house once in a while (gasp, maybe even worked) she wouldn't have been depressed (or maybe someone would have NOTICED) and her children would be alive today.  It's so easy to take one instance of bad childcare and generalize, but the door swings both ways!

  • Ah, but the important part, Mammabear, is that we must Always Blame Women. Stay at home? You're lazy, or bad, or crazy. Work? You're selfish, or neglectful, or endangering your child. But come hell or high water, if you're a woman, you're doing it wrong.
