Non perishable food?

The whole milk issue in the FFFC reminded me.  I KNOW there are items out there but when tasked with having to find foods that need to be neither hot nor cold, I'm really struggling.  DH would wait to eat tuna until he was near death because he hates it so much.  Dry cereal, crackers, check.  I've got granola bars and stuff.  But really, is there much that is meal worthy that lasts out a power outing storm?

Re: Non perishable food?

  • Depends on what you consider "meal worthy".

You can make a decent chili out of just canned beans and chili seasoning.  All of that is non-perishible.

  • You could stock up on those Gerber Meals for your LO. They are no perishable. Soup you can eat cold canned veggies etc.
  • Canned soup.  It may not be amazing straight out of the can but it is edible.  If you have a gas stove, then you can even cook it.  Canned fruits and veggies.  Peanut butter or other nut butters and jelly.

  • I used to like cold Chef Boyardee. I could do it again.

I guess I'm thinking more of the needing to be hot aspect because we would have no stove or microwave if we don't have power.  I don't have an issue eating soup, veggies, beefaroni, etc. cold but do most people feel the same?  Obviously if we're talking about evacuation worthy, stranded on your roof kind of disaster people do whatever they have to.  I'm thinking of the less severe, but still without power for days, situations.

  • My boss stocked up on Melba toast and canned ham during H1N1 I believe.

I would eat Spaghetti O's straight out of the can.  But none of the ones with the weird meat Ick!

I gag people because I'll eat all kinds of shitt cold or room temperature.  Honestly, I often feel that it has more flavor than when it's hot.  Me = weirdo, says my family.

  • If you have a grill you could warm it on that.

I wouldn't be thrilled to eat it cold but if we didn't have anything else I would be able to.

  • They also make canned chicken packed similar to tuna.  You could buy little individual packets of mayo and make chicken salad, or you could mix the chicken with canned beans or veggies.

I disagree there.  Tomato sauces taste best when they are hot enough to burn your mouth. But then they burn your mouth and nothing tastes as good for a day or so.

  • I'd suggest investing in a camp stove & some cans of fuel.  You have many more options that way, including mac n' cheese.  Also, don't forget your BBQ too.
  • My co-worker ate sardines in the AM and corned beef in the PM every day for 2.5 months after a hurricane knocked out their power in Jamaica.  Yum! (j/k)

Could you do some baking and make like some healthy muffins or something?  I'd have a hard time getting C to eat cold soup but you can get a lot of stuff into a muffin!

  • What about having a mini charcoal grill in storage?  Then ones meant for tailgating and camping.  You'd be able to heat things up that way.

And I love PPs idea about making and freezing some muffins.  Easy to sneak nutrition into (maybe specificially make some with protein powder, fruits, and veggies).  You could make breakfast sandwiches or something like that to freeze too.
