Long time no see...What would you do?-LONG

Hi ladies!  It has been awhile since I posted, but I have always lurked when I had time.  Just look at all the beautiful one year olds!!!

So, I find myself ready to have baby #2 in one week (or so).  I had a doctor's appt. yesterday, and my doctor tells me that she is leaving for a week starting on Tuesday, October 30th and will not be back until November 6th.  I am due on the 2nd.  She goes on to tell me she did not say anything because she thought I would have already given birth by now (I went into PTL at 31 and 33 weeks...all is quiet now).

She knows I will only see a female doctor for very personal reasons.  I explained that at the beginning, and she assured me that it was only her and a lady on call in a nearby town that delivers babies at my hospital.  Well, unbeknowst to me, the lady moved and now they have a male doctor (as of 4 weeks ago).

I am now 2 cm dilated.  At yesterday's appt, she asked if I wanted her to strip my membranes.  No.  That was done with my first by another dr. and it led to tons of interventions that made my blood pressure so low that I almost went into cardiac arrest, and then the counteractive shot made my LO's heart rate almost above the allowable limit, which he then was monitored closely in the NICU for 2 days after birth.  Needless to say, I want a med-free birth.  How in the hell am I supposed to do all this with my doctor gone?  I refuse to have a male doctor.  Should I go to a different hospital this late in the game?  I am POed.  What would you do?  I am freaking 39 weeks pregnant, and NOW my doctor tells me this!!!

Thank you, ladies!!!  Cookies to you for getting this far!

  • Congrats on #2!  And it is good to "see" you here.

I am so sorry about your dr.  I guess it depends on how insistent you are about a female.  Are there NO other options for your current hospital for a female dr?  You could call the other hospital and see if it is even an option I guess, and go from there?

  • If your Dr trusts the male Dr then you should as well. I would be pissed but not to the point of causing stress to myself or baby.

  • At the end of the day, the thing that matters most is a healthy and safe delivery of your baby. Maybe instead of hunting down a female doctor you could get in touch with a counselor who can help you work through the situation?

Congratulations on your new baby, and it is good to see you again!

Congrats on your new LO, too!  No other options at the hospital.  It is in a small town.  It is the same distance away as the large hospital I went to with DS.  At least they had a female and a male on call doctor at all times.  I am debating whether to call and ask if they would "take me back," sans all interventions.

Side-note: I guess what really ticks me off is I was not told until yesterday about all the changes, and my dr. knows my whole situation.  I do not want some doctor I have never seen before deliver my baby...let alone a male.  There is not enough counseling in the world that would get me to the point where I would tolerate a male physician for OBGYN care.  Been there, done that.

Thank you for your comments!  :)  I really wish I had more time to bump.  I miss talking with you all!!!

  • While my first instinct is to say that you should just suck it up and let the male doctor deliver baby #2 (or hope that you deliver late and your doctor is back), but I don't know your history and reasons that you are so set against having a male doctor.  Nurses and midwives are perfectly qualified to deliver a baby when there are no complications.  Would you be comfortable having a nurse deliver your baby with the male doctor on standby in case something goes wrong?  I think that if there was a complication when you were in labor, your number 1 priority would be to have a healthy baby so you'd be more inclined to forget about the fact that a male delivered him/her.

  • I guess I don't understand why you're so opposed to letting a qualified male doctor deliver your child. Its not like he's never seen a vag before.

First of all, I was just thinking of you the other day and was wondering if you had given birth yet.

Second of all that really sucks, she could have informed you earlier but she has to vacation too. (I would be jiust as pissed BTW)

Third, I am in the same boat as you I will only see a female OB/Gyno, which caused some problems with my last pregnancy as most places were "rotating" doctors with males on staff.  I finally found one and I love her.

    My advice is

    (A) call the big hospital and see who they have on call (male/female),

( B) keep that child in till the 6th

    (C) You could call the Femaile OB's in the area and see if they would be willing to fill in over the next week

. (D) when your in labor the main person you will see is your lovely nurse who in almost all cases is a female, try to relax and if a male does have to come in at the end , remember he is there for a very short period of time.

I hope that it all works out and COngrats!!!!!

  • And here I was thinking I was the only one crazy enough to have Irish twins. Congrats!

I have no advice, really. However, assuming that you are in the US....you guys pay so much for your deliveries. That makes you a customer IMO, so you should be able to find the provider you are happy with. Call the hospital. There must be a third year resident at least who is female.....and if shiit hits the fan, it really won't matter then. U til then, a female resident could be the solution to your problem.

    Good luck to you!

ITA with pear. I am sorry you're in such a crappy situation though. Something to think about is that you will probably only see the doctor for a few minutes at a time throughout labor. You'll have a nurse with you more of the time, and odds are your nurse will be a woman.

Good luck with everything and congratulations on your second little one! I hope everything goes well for you!

  • I am sorry you are going through with this. If you personally feel that you need a female doctor I would talk to your current medical provider about your concerns. They might be able to come up with an option for you.

  • Thank you for the comments, ladies. I have a call in to my previous doctor and hospital.  I am going to see what my options are.
