XP: Tdap shot

Hi there! Hope everyone has a TGIF!

I read the news about Tdap shot today and that pregnant women should take it either before or after delivery of the baby. I only have 18 days left before my delivery. I just called and talked to the OB on call and she told me it's better to take it sooner than later but it's not urgent and that I can take it in my next MFM appointment next week or the following appointment the following week or even after delivery.

I also have not taken my seasonal flu shot yet. And if I have to pick one to take first instead of taking both at the same time, which one should I take? I'm thinking I will not wait but to take one tomorrow when I go to the NST appointment. What would you do? Need some advise! TIA!

Re: XP: Tdap shot

  • They can do them both at the same time. But I would go with the flu if you want to choose. Wait the incubation period and get the other.

  • Tdap takes 2 weeks before becoming effective. I did both shots at my last appointment. I would just go ahead and do both. Tdap is very important. People are dying from pertussis, not so much with the flu.

  • Thank you!  Do you know how long will be the incubation of flu shot?

Totally confused about this.   A pediatrician I visited suggested I get one during 3rd Tri.    My OBs office said "they'll give it to you in the hospital when you deliver" (and then guilted me into the flu shot I wasn't sure I really needed).

the other confusing thing is....do I really have to enforce not allowing visitors who haven't had the shot?   people seem really resistant (other than new mothers)

I know what you mean.  I'm confused too.

  • Thank you ladies for the info and advise!  I think I will have my flu shot done tomorrow at my NST appointment and my Tdap shot in two weeks after incubation is over.  I had side effects in my past flu shot.  I'd play safe this time.  Thank you so much again!

  • If you had a tetanus booster in the last several years you may want to call the doctor that gave it to you to see if it was Tdap. Most offices don't stock tetanus only. I knew that I had a tetanus shot a couple years ago and called and realized that it was tdap so I did not need to get it again. Glad I didn't have to get an unnecessary shot.

  • For me, the muscle around the injection area Tdap hurts longer than the flu shot did. Took about 2 or 3 weeks for my arm muscle to stop aching when I lifted my arm after the Tdap. The flu shot took about 2 or 3 days of much more minor soreness. I would go for both before the baby is born because would want to hold, lift, etc. the LO without the arm ache feeling.

  •  id take flu first.

My mom is a post postpartum nurse and says that  if moms dont have tdap before giving birth, its okay to get it after. So knowing that  youll still be OK if you wait on that one, its what id do

  • I got both at the same time. If my OB said that I couldn't, I would have taken the Tdap first over the flu due to the severity of Whooping Cough.

  • I got both at the same time.  The TDaP arm hurt for much longer than the flu arm.  I'd wanna get that soreness over with before the baby is born.

I think I would do the same.  The Tdap is guaranteed protection from Whooping Cough.  Every year the flu shot is an educated guess as to what will be the most prevalent flues.  So if they get it wrong, it might not offer as much in the way of protection.  Don't get me wrong, both are important and I get the flu shot every year, but how effective it will be can not be determined until after flu season gets underway.
