Baby grunts all the time, is that normal?

This may be a strange question, but I am not sure what all the grunting is about.  He is 3 weeks and 4 days old and it seems to happen a lot at night.  I am worried it is a tummy ache or gas.  I am breastfeeding and I have not allowed him to take a bottle yet.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Thanks for any insight!

  • Thanks for the reply.  It is crazy what you worry about as a new mom!  I also forgot to mention that he seems to fight me at night to feed.  He pushes against my breasts, pulls on my nipples, and he will come off of them and cry to keep nursing.  It's like he doesn't know what on Earth he wants.

  • My LO one grunts when I first lay him down at night and before he wakes in the morning. I always thought it was either gas or him trying to break out of his swaddle. My pedi said it might be neither that baby grunting was normal.
  • My baby does this when my breast is empty or she is not getting the milk fast enough. Have you tried switching breasts?

  • DD grunts a lot.  Sometimes she's gassy (she's EBF) but usually it's just her being noisy.  I don't think it's a problem--except she keeps me awake sometimes!

  • My DS grunts all. The. Time! I'm glad to hear this is normal. I wasn't necessarily concerned about the grunting but I did notice that he does it way more than I remember with my girls.
  • our little girl grunts all the time too!  She normally seems happy, I think she just likes to make the noise!

  • My 5 week old does this too.  He even does it when he is sleeping sometimes.  Although, I call it growling lol.  He doesn't seem to do it for any particular reason.  Maybe he just likes the way it sounds.  They learn so much, so fast!
