Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby will only be happy for me & will only nap with me...

Hi,

My baby is 7 weeks old and since he has been born will only stop crying when I am holding him.  He also will not nap during the day, except for in my arms. A couple of weeks ago I got a ring sling which has been great so that I can get my hands free. He will fall asleep almost immediately in the sling but within 5 minutes of me putting him down, whether it be in his bassinet, crib, playpen he wakes up and cries. He will nap however in the truck or in a stroller. I love my son and I think it is great that he is so attached to me but it is hard on my back. I can't even have my husband spend some time with him without him crying. My husband is frustrated because he feels like he can't do anything right to get him stop crying. He will only stop cryijng when he is handed to me. How can my son bond with him (I'm EBF)? He does the bathes and some diaper changes but my back needs a break! Help! :(

  • I don't really have an answer for you except that I completely know what you're going through. My 1st LO was the SAME way and it finally ended when he was around 3mo old.

    Have you tried swaddling him?

  • In terms of napping, that sounds quite developmentally normal (not that it makes it any less tiring). Are you willing to try a wrap-style carrier? I am a huge fan of woven wraps for many reasons, but one is that they are extremely supportive. A ring sling is great, but assymetrical carries are indeed tough on the body.

As for your DH. some ideas...
-Wear baby and go for a walk outside (outside tends to be calming)
-Spend time together at a different time of day (like pre-work while you sleep in)
-Try leaving them together to work it out (as in, you go out for a cup of coffee or a walk) (That strategy is a fit for some families, but not others.)
-Spend time together doing fun things that will have your DH relaxed and then have him wear or hold baby during it (dining out, walking the mall, swinging on the porch swing, etc.)
