How do you know if you need to switch formula?

Formula rookie here. DS1 was EBF however DS2 is getting a mix of both formula and BM so it seems like a whole new world to me!

I'm familiar with the signs of a dairy allergy and reflux, but what other reasons indicate a need to switch formulas? Whether it be to a different brand or a more sensitive variety. Excess spit up? Gas? Fussiness? Other?

DS still gets probably 75 BM so all his stools are liquidy.

  • like diarrhea, where it just runs through baby every time they eat.

Are you having specific issues? What formula are you using? I use similac and thought around 3-4 weeks that we were having excessive gas/fissiness and I called the similac feeding support line(phone # is on all the containers) and they were awesome. The reps are either RN's, lactation specialtists or registered dieticians and they know there stuff and were super helpful. They also sent me samples and coupons. I suggest calling them. Or if you are using enfamil or gerber, Im sure they have a support line also. Look on your formula can. They definately know there stuff and should be able to help and suggest the best formula for your LO and instruct you on how to slowly switch over.

That last post of mine should have said 75 percent BM. I used a sample can of Similac sensitive for lactose sensitivity although DS didn't have a known sensitivity. He seemed so gassy with it so I switched to Enfamil Gentlease. We used an entire sample can of that and seems even more gassy. He spends most of his days grunting and farting and fussing through naps as I can hear his belly working on something. Just curious if we need to switch yet again, or maybe it's typical baby GI gut issues.

Could be normal baby GI stuff, it could also be something you're eating since he's getting 75% breastmilk.  Can you cut out formula altogether for a couple of days and see if it clears up?  If it does, you'll know it's the formula, and if it doesn't, it's something in your diet or your baby's "normal" as his GI tract develops.

  • Just wanted to say my DS is EBF and in between 3-4 weeks is when he started getting really gassy/fussy.  We still haven't figured out if it's something I'm eating or just normal NB GI stuff.  I think 3-4 weeks is pretty normal for when things like reflux and sensitivities start showing up. Not saying that's your issue.  Could definitely be the formula, but keep it in mind anyway.
