Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Those of you with tile floors

How on earth do you keep baby safe on them?!?!  We have tile in the living room and have a large area rug with an alphabet mat on top, but of course he never stays on that.  He hasn't fallen back on it or anything but he will face plant sometimes when he is crawling and is scares me to death! Suggestions?

Re: Those of you with tile floors

  • I am in the same boat as you! Tile EVERYWHERE. We've got the alphabet mat as well...and he seems to hang out everywhere but...I just watch him closely, that's all I can do at this point.

I do tell myself that he's going to get bumps and bruises along the way...but, I still hate to see it...

    I'm open to suggestions too...anyone???

  • We have tile and wood and LO does just fine. It is easy for her while she is learning to walk in her bare feet. We have a play room with a foam mat and throw rug, and she spends a lot of time in there. We also have a throw rug in the living room where our main couches are. She has fallen backwards on the hard wood once. Live and learn because it has only happened once.

  • We only have HW floors too, it sucks when they are learning to walk especially, but hey it toughens them up!

Our rule is NO SOCKS in the house because you will fall and fall hard.

We keep our 9 month old in bare feet so she can grip the floor and our toddler isn't allowed to run around in socks either.  That's about all you can do.

Oh on a certain part of the floor close to the tv we have those jigsaw cushion mats that are nice to sit on while they play.

  • DS falls and he learns.  It used to freak me right out, but he's adapted and usually when he falls he prevents his own head from hitting the ground.  We had a few bumps in the beginning, but nothing major.

  • Unfortunately, falls happen.  DD hasn't fallen yet from standing on the tile, but has on the hardwood.  She's face planted plenty of times crawling on the tile though.  She cries for a minute, then she's all better.  There's not much you can do and no way to protect them 100% of the time.  We have rugs where the kids generally play, but she does follow me off them or go off on her own.
