Babies: 3 - 6 Months

question about feeding solids..

My LO will be 5 months in about a week. We decided to try feeding him oatmeal a few days ago. Every time we try to feed him he gets mad and starts screaming after 23 bites. Most of it ends up on him rather than in his belly. I know this is a learning process, but am wondering if anyone else had this issue. I feel bad that he gets frustrated. We usually end up giving up and adding what is left to his bottle and he eats that just fine. Do I keep "practicing" with him or do I stop and wait a bit longer. Is this his way of telling me he isn't ready yet? Just curious what others have experienced when starting your little ones on cereal/solids. Thanks!

  • we sometimes have this problem, and it usually happens when I am scraping the bowl to get it all to one side for easier scooping... I think its b/c (in our case) he isn't getting continuous food like a bottle provides... once he gets the next bite he is ok...

  • This happened mostly when we were doing plain oatmeal mixed with breastmilk... honestly I think he just hated how it tasted and how liquidy it seemed! So now I breast feed, then mix the oatmeal with apple sauce and just give him that. He does great with it. I noticed that my little guy hates it really thin like it suggests. So mixing with the apple sauce makes it easier for him to move to the back and swallow, and he doesn't get it everywhere like when it was mixed with milk. I know technically this isn't how it says to prepare, but it works for DS so I go with it :) He is 17 pounds at 3.5 months, and still nurses every 2 hours even at night, so I am not worried about the few "empty calories" once a day. It's fun and much more enjoyable, and I get smiles instead of fussing.

  • DS was frustrated the first time we tried cereal/milk and I think it's because the food wasn't continuous like he was used to getting. We gave up after a few minutes and I nursed him. I tried again the other night and he loved it. He did get frustrated when there was a long time between spoonfuls but he did good! He also ended up with a lot on his bib and shirt but its a learning process. Keep trying!

  • The EXACT same thing happened to us! I talked to a girlfriend who told us to feed him BEFORE he was hungry, when he was at his happiest. It worked like a charm. Feedings are a happy experience now and he loves his rice cereal, oatmeal, and homemade baby food. He was just getting frustrated because the food wasn't filling him up as fast as the bottle. I would feed him an hour or so after his first feeding.
  • What oatmeal are you guys using?

If you aren't doing solids after LO has already eaten some, try that. We do 2/3 of his night bottle, solids, and then finish the bottle before bed. While he isn't as extremely eager for the food as he would be if he was really hungry, he is interested and doesn't get frustrated.

I also agree about not thinning it out a lot too. My guy definitely likes it thicker. Somewhere around equal parts cereal and water. I also second trying it mixed with a fruit or veggie. The two hits around here are oatmeal mixed with banana or peaches.
