Help with glasses.

DS is virtually blind in his left eye and to try and force it to work the doctor prescribed him glasses with a modified lense in the left eye only.  He was ok at first with keeping them on but has recently been rebelling against them.  He threw them so hard the other day that the lense popped out and got huge scratches.  Luckily we have insurance on them and they are being replaced, but it has taken more than a week to get them back because they are special order and so he has had to deal with the scratched lense.  Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help teach DS to be gentle with his glasses?

  • Do you think he is rebelling because he can't see well through them?

Gentle has never been something DS could be with his glasses, so  Miraflex frames have been a Godsend. He still will throw them off if he is bored. So if need be, we remove them for car and stroller rides. We love miraflex frames-- they have a strap and are rubbery.

Have you tried patching with the glasses on? My guess is if he can see with righty without glasses, that is what he will prefer. You may need to patch righty and then put on the glasses. He will learn the glasses help him see using lefty.

My DS patches two hours a day and wears a bifocal.  He took to patching really well. I called it a "sticker" and the first day I wore one, too.

    Hope this helps! :)

  • I could have written FloraK8's response. My DS has been in Miraflex glasses since he was 1, he's now 3. We also patch his good eye with the glasses, so he keeps them on so he can see well. The car is a problem sometimes for us, so we don't worry about that. But you simply have to stick with it. We put them on and redirect his attention when he wants them off. In about 2 minutes he's forgotten he wants them off.

Check our Miraflex. They are comfortable and look cute.

Same here. Glasses since 15 months for DS1 (now 3yrs). Miraflex are fantastic! In fact, when we needed to get new glasses two months ago (he got a new script), we opted to get a larger size of the Miraflex rather than traditional glasses. He loves that they stay on his head while running, etc. Definitely give patching the strong eye while wearing the glasses. That was how he figured out he could see out of that eye!

  • My DS got glasses about a year ago.  We have Easy Flex glasses (flexible metal), I love that they look like normal glasses and have no strap in the back (my DS would hate the strap).  I would also recommend a second pair of glasses, it saves us when we do manage to bend our glasses or loose a screw or lose a pair in the house.  We also have "cables" on the ear piece of his glasses so that they stay tight on this head and don't slip down.

It took my DS about 3 days to get used to his glasses and now they are just a part of who he is.  To get success wearing glasses, I sat down with him, turned on his favorite TV show, put the glasses on and gave him an M&M every minute or two while he had his glasses on.  The M&M and the TV show were so that he associated wearing his glasses with pleasurable experiences.  I also doled out tons of praise, you look so cute, wow it must be fun to be able to see.  If I had to do patching, I would do much the same, turn on a fun TV show (I would probably make patching time the only time that TV was available), and give M&M's and praise for wearing the glasses and the patch.  We recently went to build a bear to make a bear for getting ride of the paci and we found that they have glasses that fit on the bears, we picked up a pair and my DS loves that he has a bear with glasses.
