Fifth's Disease Vent...

So a few cases of fifth's disease is going around my school. I am a teacher who is 30 weeks pregnant. I went for my blood test and it came back I am not immune. The doctor is calling me back tomorrow to see what the next step is. I guess I am nervous that my little girl is at risk these last few weeks, however, I am not in school until I get clearance. Anyone else ever been in this situation? Thanks for your help!!

Re: Fifth's Disease Vent...

  • I am a dental hygienist and a couple weeks ago had a kid come in coughing all over the place. His mom said he had Fifths Disease (Slap Face) and his doctor told her to not let him around pregnant people! Wonderful. Just so happens I had an appt the next day at my OB. He checked my records and found that I was immune which most people are. But he said if I wasent, he would do blood work in one week to check and go from there.. he seemed pretty concerned until he found out I was immune.

I am sorry about your situation. I remember how irritated and scared I was when I found out that kid had it. I am sure it will all be fine though!!

  • Last year I had to reveal my pregnancy earlier than I intended after one of my students (who we sent to nurse with a rash) was sent back to the room and we were told it was probably fifths. Of course I panicked and was like I need to leave the room and everyone new why. Anyways, I am also not immune and my doctor said that since the child has the rash you have already been exposed to the virus. I was tested twice over 2 weeks and did not catch the virus. But I was really pissed that our school never informed the staff that there had been an out break even though thy knew other teachers were pregnant. The good news is even if you get it the chances of it harming your baby are still pretty small and I believe the later in pregnancy you are the better it is still. So I would try not to worry too much.

  • That was going around my school the last few weeks. I called my doctor and he didnt seem too concerned because I wasnt in close contact with the kids that had it. My husband said that he read that it is more of a problem if you are in the 1st trimester. Good Luck. I hope everything works out for you.
  • This happened at our school last year.  I shared a student who had Fifth's Disease with my (then) pregnant neighbor.  It was kind of scary for the other teacher, but everything ended up okay.  The girl stayed out for a few days and then the custodian sanitized the desks everyday for awhile (I don't know if that helps).  I am sending positive thoughts your way!

Oh, I had to get tested for FD this year and found out I am immune.  I am pretty sure I have that student to thank :/

  • Thank you everyone! I appreciate your words of encouragement. I am waiting for the doctor to call me back. I am sure I will be fine since I am 31 weeks pregnant, today! Yah! But I am not sure if my district is going to let me come back since more cases are coming up, but hey I guess I have to look at it as an extended maternity leave and enjoy the time off, before my little girl arrives!
  • Chiming in late on this one, but the greatest danger to a fetus is between 16-20 weeks.  Even if you did happen to contract it during that time, which you're way past anyway, it's only somewhere around a 3% risk of death to the baby.  They are usually able to manage the symptoms with antibiotics.

There were two cases in my work building when I was 18 weeks pregnant.  Like you, I'm not immune.  I was freaking out until I researched it a bit and talked to my doctor.  My blood test came back negative - hopefully yours does, too!
