1st Trimester

4 weeks, first pregnancy

Hi everyone.

We recently found out that we will be having a baby in the next 7 1/2 to 8 months. I have no idea what to do or who to speak to, with us being first time parents. I called up the doctors who cant see me untill a weeks time and I just want to know if there is soemthing I should be doing right now. I have the foclic acid pills and have stopped smoking, drinking and caffine. Is there anything else?

Thanks you in advance for your help.

  • I would get a full fledged prenatal vitamin. You need more than just folic acid even though that's fantastic. Consider one with DHA. Other than that you are doing everything right. Just relax until your appointment. Pregnancy is a whole lot of the waiting game.

  • Pick up the book What to Expect When You're Expecting.  That will give you some good basic info of what to do/avoid.  Start taking a prenatal vitamin, stop smoking and drinking.  One or two cups of coffee or tea is OK per day.

    Congrats!

  • First of all congratulations.  We have just found out as well and it is also our first, so I get the being freaked out part. Great questions though.  I think I am still trying to wrap my head around it, so they certainly helped me to start thinking about things. Good luck.

  • Hi! I'm in the same boat as you :) I'm researching and reading as much as I can, asking my mother and significant other's mother for advice. It's nice to see someone at the same stage as I am!

Maybe we can help one another and discuss our progress through this journey? :) Hope you're feeling well!

  • Congratulations! I agree with what everyone has said so far.  The big thing you should be doing right now is enjoying the fact that you are pregnant and taking it one day at a time.  Exercise is good, but don't take on anything too vigorous unless you have already been doing it - like running. Reading through TheBump will help answer some of the random questions that you will come up with.  If you're worried about something, a symptom, things you shouldn't be doing, etc. you can always call the doctors office and ask them.  I'm at about the same point as you - just started my 5th week - with my first pregnancy.  I also recommend going to your local library and reading as many books on pregnancy that you can get your hands on.  Good luck and Congrats again!

  • Congrats! I am also going to be 4 weeks as of tomorrow and can't seem to wrap my head around the idea of being pregnant. I'm excited, but also very nervous and anxious about all of the upcoming changes. Every little thing that I feel in my body makes me wonder what is going on inside. As much as they say to "just enjoy the fact that you are pregnant", the constant worry and questions kicked in right away.

Its only been 48 hours since my BFP, but the forums here have already become my security blanket. SInce we are not telling anyone yet, I feel like this is the only place I can turn to for support other than my DH (who can only understand as much as he can because he is a guy!).

    We are in it together!
