Cheap (but safe) Convertible Seat Recommendations

We have the Diono Radian RXT for my car, but I am looking for something a little less expensive for DHs truck since she doesn't ride with him as often (but still often enough to warrant a 2nd seat). With that being said, I don't want to sacrifice safety. Obviously all carseats are "safe" to some degree, but some are more so than others. I've tried wading through the selection of car seats out there, but there are so many. It's over-whelming. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated?

  • The Cosco Scenera 40 is a good option.  It has a tall shell.  40 lbs. and 43 inches rear facing.

Thanks! I'm glad you mentioned tall shell, as I forgot to mention that we have a long baby.

  • Unless something else comes out before we need to move to a convertible, we may go with this one: https://www.target.com/p/cosco-apt-inner-circles/-/A-13999427#prodSlot=medium_1_1

Ideally we would get a Radian but I just don't foresee it being doable for us due to cost, but we'll see. I'd love to RF to 45 pounds but I will accept 40, just no lower than that (unless of course she becomes way too tall for it to be an option in terms of seat height limits).

I did a lot of research on convertible seats for the grandparents when DD was 1 (she's 3 now) but the Cosco Scenera was rated highest in the mid-price range.  So we bought each set one since they both picked her up once or twice a month we wanted to make sure the seat she was in was safe and to our standards. We had DD in a Graco MyRide 65 (one in my car and DH's, she went to/from daycare in my car but his was the weekend car)  that we got for $135 at Target and it was the best seat safety wise without going to a Britax or something in that price range.

  • Cosco Scenera, Cosco Apt and Safety First Guide 65. Out of those 3, I prefer the Guide, but they are all good seats. You will likely need a noodle or a towel with the Scenera for rear-facing.

  • I have also read good reviews and recs for the Cosco Scenera.
  • Thanks, ladies! After reading the reviews on the Scenera, that is the one we are going to go with.

You can get them cheaper at Wal-Mart or KMart too.  :)

Yeah I ended up getting it at Wal-Mart for considerably less than the typical "baby item" stores. I think it came out to be $42 total (w/ tax + 97 cent shipping). Thanks again for the suggestions! I was completely overwhelmed with all of the choices.
