Postpartum weight GAIN??

I loved being pregnant because I could eat whatever I pleased and barely gained. A month after I delivered, I was back at prepreg weight. I thought with breastfeeding I would be able to finally work on some extra weight that has always been so stubborn. But instead of losing, I am horrified to find that I am slowly gaining!!!

Anyone else out there? This sucks.

I am hungry all the time, and the baby isn't sleeping well so I am tired all the time too. Yes, my eating and exercise could be improved. But they're not horrible by any means.

Is there some secret to losing weight while BFing? I don't want to mess up my supply.

Almost five months postpartum and really discouraged...

  • I'm curious what anyone has for suggestions on this. It's still early on for me, but I'm still above my PP weight and not really losing. I'm doing 30DS at least 3x a week and walking at least 2x. I don't think I'm over eating but I'm trying not to undereat as well (also BFing so need the calories).

  • I've been doing WW online. I found it great for getting a sense of how much to be eating. Everyone kept saying, "you're BF, you need to eat heaps," but I didn't really know what "heaps" meant.

  • The secret to weight loss is consistency with exercise and diet.  So, if you're not doing so great on getting your workouts in, and being up all the time is causing you to overeat, you're going to keep gaining.

Make daily exercise a priority, even if it is only 30 minutes of vigorous walking.  Don't let it stop there, either-- continually add activities (especially weight-training-- you'll need it for your metabolism) to challenge your body and keep your losses from stalling.

I agree with PPs that either food-journaling EVERYTHING you eat, or joining a program like Weight Watchers, is also very important. Exhaustion will stimulate you to overeat (and to retain more body fat) when you don't need the calories, so get as much rest as you can and be very aware of what you're putting into your body.  Limit low-quality calories:  no more processed foods, white flours, sugars, etc.  Fill up on vegetables, lean proteins, fruit, whole grains, and healthy fats  (basically in that order).  Drink plenty of water:  very often thirst masquerades as hunger.

Be patient and persistent and the weight will come off.  Weight loss is extremely simple:  follow the rules and it will happen.

  • Weight loss while BFing is just like weight loss any other time. You have to eat less and burn more calories. As long as it's done slow and steady and you stay hydrated it probably won't impact supply. If it does then add a little bit more food back. There's no magic solution. You have to take in fewer calories than you are burning. babyfit.com and sparkpeople.com are useful for tracking calories.
