days in hospital post-C-section

For DD, my surgery was a Tuesday morning, and I was released Saturday morning. That counts as 4 days for insurance purposes, right? The day of the actual surgery is not day 1, but rather the counter starts the next day and ends the morning of your release?

So if I have 3 days this time, and surgery is Friday morning, I should be out Monday morning, right?

I am not sure if I have 3 days or 4 (calling tomorrow), but at the hospital tour, the nurse said C-sections are given 3 days -- but I know this is really dependent on your insurance as some do give 4 days.

Anyway, just making sure I have the calendar right.

Re: days in hospital post-C-section

  • Well for me I had a c-section on a Friday and left Monday. They gave me the opportunity to leave on Sunday but I stayed. So it was 4 days total. They included the day of the surgery for me.

so your insurance permitted 4 days but you left on monday?

that's totally different from my experience. hmmm.

  • My insurance counts the day of surgery as day 1, and permits up to 5 days for a c/s.  With DS, I only stayed 2 nights (surgery Tuesday, went home Thursday) and this time I stayed 3 ( surgery tuesday, home Friday).  I could have stayed until Sunday if I'd really wanted to.

  • Hmm, so if the day of surgery is counted, is the day of release also counted? Or do they basically just count the nights?

Because if you were allowed 5 days, and you had surgery Tuesday but could have stayed until Sunday, then they are either not counting the surgery day or not counting the release day -- but that is nevertheless five nights.

So if I have 3 days, then I should be released Monday morning, right?

No, expect to be released Sunday. I had surgery Friday morning with DD, was released on Sunday. I was only allowed 3 days.

  • I am trying to figure this out as well. I am cash pay (Thanks Texas) so I am buying the hospital's c-section birth package. It says it is a 4 day stay. I am trying to figure out if that is 4 days or 4 nights. Is it 4 - 24 hour periods.

If I have my c-section at 7:00 am on Wednesday, is Wednesday day 1, Thursday day 2, Friday day 3 and Saturday day 4? Do I go home Saturday or Sunday? I think Sunday morning so that is 4 nights and 4 - 24 hour periods.

    Who knows, it's so confusing!

  • When I took the childbirth prep class, the instructor told me that it will count from the day of delivery.  I guess that means your surgery day.  She told us better to check with our insurance.  I forgot to do that.  I will need to call them tomorrow to find out.

  • I was in and out with both kids in 36 hrs.  I would have punched someone if it would have been longer.  I'm petrified that they say 3 days this time.

No, expect to be released Sunday. I had surgery Friday morning with DD, was released on Sunday. I was only allowed 3 days.

Again, really weird since I had 4 days last time and was there from Tuesday to Saturday.

I guess I'll just call and ask.

  • Actually, just got my answer on another board -- some companies count nights (which is evidently what mine did last time), which means I would be home Monday, but some count according to what time you are admitted before a certain cutoff, which means I would go home Sunday.

Frankly having a section Friday and going home Sunday sounds ludicrous, especially given my last experience. I could probably have gone home after three nights, but after two? No way.

  • I went in on Friday & was induced. c/s at 4:16pm Saturday. Left the hospital 10am Wednesday.

    4 night post c/s

    1 night pre-c/s.

  • Depends on insurance and the hospital. With DD's vaginal birth I was in the hospital Monday - Friday (she was born late Tuesday night and I wasn't admitted into my room until after midnight so they counted it as Wednesday - Friday). With DS I was expecting 3-4 days and only got 2 (barely), different hospital. His c-section was at 2pm on a Wednesday and I was gone Friday around noon. Call the hospital to see what they say, check with your insurance as to what they cover if you want to fight the hospital for a longer stay.

  • My insurance says I have 4 days and am released the fifth day -- so I get surgery Friday and go home Tuesday.

I just called the hospital, and they confirmed this -- they said they allow Monday if I am feeling OK, but Sunday no way.

     Phew!

  • With DS, mine was exactly the same as yours, except my surgery was Tuesday afternoon instead of morning.  Not sure if the timing made the difference as to whether Tuesday did or did not count as day 1.

Check your insurance policy. It will give the number of hours which are covered when all things happen "normally" with a c-section. Generally, it is 96 hours.

This post made me wonder about my insurance coverage, so I just called them.  I have United Healthcare, and they cover 96 hours after delivery.  I am having a scheduled c-section on a Monday morning, so this means I will be discharged Friday morning. I'll be there 4 nights and approx 4 days.
