So, I am starting to slowly figure out DS "schedule", and I need to figure out how to change it a bit! haha During the morning, he tends to take random 30-45 minute naps. Around 2 or so is when he starts his major sleeping of the day and will take his 2 hr nap, wake to eat, and then fall right back to sleep and then another 2 hour (or longer) nap. This gets tricky when he is snoozin away up till 7-7:30 or so. When he wakes up to eat around this time, I have been trying to incorporate some awake and activity time. I have been trying to start his bedtime "routine" around 9 or so (after putting DS1 to bed and then pumping) but he seems to fight to get to sleep until 11. He actually fell asleep at 10 last night, but was up every 2 hours after that (when he had been giving me a good 4-5 hr stretch before) I could very well attribute that to his 3 week growth spurt. Who knows.
So then I start to wonder, maybe he is overtired by the time bedtime comes (due to the forced awake/activity time in the evenings).
Maybe I just need to wait until we are past the 3 week growth spurt to get a better idea of what is going on.
I just really want to try and get him to go to sleep sooner than 11:00!
What are your 3-4 week olds doing as far as a "schedule"? I use the term "schedule" very loosly. I havent tried to put him on a schedule at all, just have been following his cues....but when I have tried to make a small change here or there, it back fires! Any other LO serious nappers in the late afternoon/evenings?
Re: 3-4 weekers, come in!
3-4 weeks may be to soon to get a schedule going. Our LO was up when ever he wanted and randomly decided that he hates being swaddled, so that's where we are now....random times where he is wide awake and the times are not consistent and a screaming child if we try to swaddle.
I've read that 6-8 weeks is a better time to start setting a schedule, for now, it's all about flexibility.
DS follows this "schedule" 50% of the time. He wakes up (btwn 7-9) then he's awake for 2 hrs or so. Then he goes down for a long nap, prob 3 hrs. Then he eats & sleeps again. Then he wakes up between 6-7, and will go to bed between 8-9.
The last couple of days it takes a lot of effort to get him to nap so he has a lot more awake time during the day.
I like this "schedule". It seems like if he does not have some evening awake time then he wakes more frequently through the night. Usually sleeps 6-7 hours at night.
My son is 3 weeks 5 days, and we've been experimenting with the best bedtime and what length of stretches to let him sleep during the night, for the best schedule.
So far it kind of seems like we have to just let him do whatever he wants, and to keep an eye on the clock so that he doesn't go too long without eating (especially at night).
But, my husband and I are both home with him right now, so it's easy for us to just let him dictate what we do all day and night.
