Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Bed time question

What age do you start letting babies "cry it out"? My Lo gives us such a hard time going down at night but once she falls asleep, she sleeps all night at 2 mo? Is she too young to let her cry it out?

Re: Bed time question

  • That technique can be started between 4-6 months I've read.

  • At our two month appt. my doctor said not to consider it until dd is 5 months. Although she also said that letting her cry for a few minutes (5-10) to go to sleep is ok and even a good thing is she puts herself to sleep, but to not let her go too long.
  • Two months is too young. They generally are too immature to console themselves.

  • Babies can't soothe themselves until 3-4 months old so most books will say not to try sleep training until 4-6 months.  If you're interested in sleep training and are okay with a cry it out method, I suggest reading Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems by Dr. Ferber or the Sleep Easy Solution.  Both of those suggest a waiting approach where you aren't just letting them cry with no intervention, you let them cry for a set amount of time (like 5 minutes) and then go in and comfort without picking them up, and on and on like that.

  • Our ped recommends 6 months. He said that they are still developing their attachment and can't soothe themselves until then.
