Diva cup users come in...

talk to me about this please...do you use it over night?  does it leak?  do you use the wash they sell to clean it or something else?  is it comfortable?

I got my first AF since everything that happened over the summer and it is awful--the heaviest I have ever had in my life.  Thank God for peroxide because it saved my ivory sheets, mattress cover and comforter this morning when I woke up in a total mess. Tongue Tied (Hand wash with cold water and peroxide, then wash in the machine on cold in case you didn't know).  I need to find something that will work better that the super absorbent overnight with wings that used to work. Sad

Re: Diva cup users come in...

  • I love my Diva Cup, but I will admit that when my flow is very heavy it does leak.  I often wear a panty liner as well as the cup, just in case.  It's very comfortable once it's in, takes some getting used to for inserting and removing but it's not nearly as big a deal as you expect.  I just wash it with soap and water, nothing special (I did boil it before the first use, but that's it).  I don't use it overnight because I find my flow is really light when I'm lying down so I don't really need it.

Sorry you're having such a craptastic AF, but good job on saving your bed linens!

  • I use a lady cup, same thing just a different brand... my first and secoond days are super super heavy and I have to empty the cup at least every two hours...still better than a tampon for me. I have to wear a pad overnight on my first and second night and I usually get up once to empty the cup. After the first two days the cup is golden. When I dump the cup I wash it with warm water. I also sterilize it by boiling it in my microwave for ten minutes between cycles. I do not buy the special soap...I am not prone to getting infections though. It is not perfect but best thing I have used so far. If you have not bought a cup yet you should read all the different brand reviews.

  • I really like my diva cup. Once in it is very comfortable. I am able to wear it all day comfortably. I don't usually wear it overnight, but I have without issue. I do usually wear a panty liner, but I am paranoid and probably could go without. I did buy the wash, but probably didn't need to. I never boiled it, just washed well in hot water. I will never go back to tampons. I also use cloth pads and prefer them over disposable.
  • I use a Luna cup but it's the same concept. I LOVE it. You might have to take it out in the middle of the night if you got up to pee since you have a heavier flow, but it's still lightyears better than tampons.  I wear a cloth pantyliner, too.

Be sure you get the post-baby size if you had a vaginal childbirth, btw. I think it's bigger?

Anyway, the Luna is very similar and about $10 cheaper than the Diva.

I've been so happy with it. First it's so much less expensive than buying tampons. Second, my periods have been shorter.  There's a learning curve but it's wonderful once you get the hang of it. It's pretty liberating to go anywhere and not worry if you have all your supplies with you.  As long as there's a sink with water and soap, you're good to go.

ETA sorry my cup is called the Moon Cup!

  • I guess I'm in the minority here. I tried the Diva cup before and after baby and I just couldn't do it. I mean I was open to the whole idea of a cup, but no matter what I tried it was always really uncomfortable and it hurt to put it in. I'm really hesitant to admit this, but the only way I don't ruin my clothes and bedding during my really heavy flow is if I wear Depends overnight Embarrassed I discovered this in the early pp days, but really it's what works for me right now. Not like MH is going anywhere near me if I'm bleeding that heavy anyways! Plus I find I don't even have to worry about laying the right position on my side while I sleep so as to not cause a massacre on the sheets so I'm much more comfortable. I know it's weird but it works for me. I also have a strange aversion to tampons since giving birth.

  • Sorry to hijack the thread, but to the ladies who use cloth pads/liners, was it hard to get used to?  I keep wanting to buy some every time I see them on ecobabybuys, but I chicken out.  I mean, I use a Diva Cup and I CD to try to make less waste and save money, but I can't quite get my head around using cloth pads/liners.  The idea of storing and washing bloody pads/liners grosses me out, even though storing and washing poopy diapers doesn't bother me in the least.

  • lcass, I much MUCH prefer the cloth pads to regular. LIke I said I just throw them in with the diapers.
  • Lcass- I much prefer cloth pads. I have a few different brands and I find them much more comfortable, more absorbent, and I feel drier. I also cloth diaper, so I just throw them in with my diapers which I wash every other day. The only drawback is that they slide around a little. I with there were some grippers (like on kids socks) for the underside, but aside from that they are great. For storage out and about I have a tiny wetbag and the pads roll up and snap, so not gross at all.

Did you cut the tail off?  If you do not cut the tail off they are extremely uncomfortable.   I hardly know mine is in.

  • If I cut the stem off of mine I would never be able to get it out. As it is sometimes I get a little freaked out that I can't reach it. The first 10 min or so it is a little uncomfortable, but after that I don't even know it is in unless I let it get too full and then it feels heavy.

I did cut the tail off, but it still doesn't work for me. I'm just weird I guess, or maybe I need to try some more. This post inspired me to check out cloth pads though! I'm also slowly coverting to the idea of cloth diapers for the next kid. Maybe.

Really?  Does yours have the tube type tail or is it a flat tail? ( the flat tail style I hear you can leave long) I know different brands have different styles.  I cut the whole tail off mine and I have no problem getting it.  If you bare down it scoots forward too.

  • I didn't cut the tube stem off mine, either.  It's mildly uncomfortable sometimes for the first few minutes, but then I don't notice it after that.  But I have trouble gripping it sometimes as is, so I'm too scared to cut it.

  • It is a tube tail. I have to squat and bear down to just grab the tail with my fingernails....I guess I just have a special vag...?
