When are they *truly* sitting "unsupported"?

Like how many seconds or even minutes would you say they need be able to sit up without assistance before I can really say she's sitting unassisted? I think she's at about 7 seconds before she starts to slump over or to the side lol

Re: When are they *truly* sitting "unsupported"?

  • From watching my friend's babies...I'd say 7-8 months before they are really sitting unsupported

  • yeah as a photographer, a lot of babies i shoot aren't really sitting up alone and without someone ready to catch them (def had two face plants that i remember!  yikes!) til AT LEAST six months but for the kids i've shot, typically seven.
  • I would say several minutes.  My LO now sits for awhile, I'd say up to 20 minutes playing with toys.  I put a pillow behind her because if she gets too excited about something she will fall over but not that often.

Sitting unassisted for a long period is a 6ish month skill, can be up to 8-9 months also.

  • My son has been sitting for minutes at a time. I can't leave him and walk away, but I can put pillows around him and play on the computer or eat or whatever sitting next to him. He must have concentrated on sitting though, because he only rolls over once in awhile. Not really interested in rolling here at all!

My daughter is not interested in rolling either!  I'm glad to hear that your LO isn't either.

As for sitting, she'll sit for a couple of seconds but then will topple over.  She does great with the boppy so I'm guessing it won't be long before she's got it down.

  • I would say when they can sit for any length of time by themselves. DD has been sitting completely on her own for a week or so now. She can sit up for 20 mins and play with toys in front of her. I just put a Boppy pillow behind her just in case!
