Help with BF

FTM here. My baby boy is only a week old, and has been pretty good with breastfeeding until tonight. He does go into these cluster feeding modes, which I know are normal, but today has been exhausting. Starting at about 4pm he wanted to feed and has continued to cry and act like he is starving ever since. My boobs feel like they are about to fall off. Anyway... my question is... is he getting enough milk? Is feeding him on and off for the past few hours diminishing my supply? He finally has fallen asleep, but I want to make sure there will be milk there when he wakes. Sorry to sound crazy I am stressed and want to make sure he is getting food.

Re: Help with BF

  • We were just talking about this in my BFing support group today.  Cluster feeding is normal, and babies tend to have a growth spurt between 7-10 days where they will nurse CONSTANTLY.  It's their way of signaling your body to produce more.  When DS hit his growth spurt at 9 days old, we ended up in the doctor's office because he was so inconsolable, and even the pedi said it was normal.  The first few weeks are HARD because baby is changing so quickly and his needs are adjusting, it levels out around week 6 for most people.  Try not to stress, drink a lot of water since he was nursing non-stop for several hours (so you don't dehydrate), and try to get some rest before he wakes up & wants to nurse for another few hours.

  • It's normal unfortunately!! My nipples feel the same way.  Try to hang in there and I wouldn't worry about him gaining unless the ped says something.  Good luck!!

  • As PPs said, totally normal between 7-10 days and again sometime between 2 and 3 weeks old.  Not fun, but it means your LO is growing strong!

I just went to my BF'ing support group tonight & was asking her about pumping and whether that could deplete my supply for the next time LO wants to eat.  She said, that basically when LO eats they only empty around 2/3 of your supply and then your supply replenishes relatively quickly.  So, when your LO goes through a growth spurt it's the same thing.  Even though he/she just ate, you are constantly making more milk.

  • I will be honest that getting a baby scale has saved my sanity. A LC I talked to said they used to be standard in all baby nurseries but who knows.

I am sure your baby is getting enough but just a tip if you keep stressing over it.
