Is anyone else dealing with massive tantrums?

DS's tantrums are OUT OF CONTROL. Everything is "ME!" and "Mine!" He pushes, hits, kicks. He fights back. Time-outs are a disaster so I'm not even trying them anymore.

I know he's trying to be independent but he's being horrible about sharing (daycare says he's a perfect angel there, but the other day when i dropped him off I saw him push another girl away from a toy he wanted) and I don't mind giving him choices/options so he feels in control, but I honestly can't always do that. Like this morning when we were supposed to be out the door in 5 minutes and he didn't have a diaper or clothes on. I tried everything to get him to lay down or participate in getting dressed but all I got was a tantrum filled with banshee screaming, kicking, flailing, etc.

I'm burning out big time. I'm the one always home with the kids (when I'm not working). He's awake for an hour in the morning and an hour and a half when I get home, and yet in those 2.5 hours all he does is tantrum! I am at my wit's end.

  • I have no advice but I feel your pain.   Hope it gets better soon! (for both of us)

  • No....my little guy just can't deal. This morning, I was trying to take him to the museum to go ride a carousel and that meant not playing with his truck. Meltdown of major proportions.

We left the house with him screaming, and my neighbor was on his back porch drinking his coffee. I swear he thinks I'm an awful mom, because I was at my wit's end.  I tried to say something to smooth things over, like "life is rough when you're 2 years old" but he didn't laugh. ugh.

  • DS is doing the same!  Ugh, it's totally frustrating.  He's been having massive meltdowns at every meal.  I don't have any advice that you aren't already doing.  Just wanted to commiserate.

  • DS2 hasn't been too bad... YET... DS1 had horrible tantrums around this age, if I recall. Like woke up crying, went to bed crying... And I work too, and would get so upset that I pretty much only saw him screaming and crying most of the time.

To me, time outs don't work well this young. The thing that worked the best was just letting him freak out- make sure he can't hurt himself, but if he's throwing a fit let him have at it! I'd say "sorry we don't hit/need to share/whatever the offense is", but after that, I wouldn't even try to talk or make eye contact.

Obviously if you're trying to get out the door, just do what you gotta do and get outta there! I get each of my guys dressed before their feet hit the floor in the morning- makes it easier. If we get downstairs and they're in their toys, forget it!!

GL Mama! It's a rough one!!
