Refusing milk, what should I do?

So LO is 7 months. He is a pretty big baby. He loves to eat anything and everything, never had a problem till now. For the past 2 days, he's been refusing milk. He'll suck a little and then stops. I've given him different brands of bottles and nothing. The only thing he eats are solids. He gets fussy but he just won't take it. Could it be teething? His two bottom teethes are out so maybe the top ones are coming? He has a little cold as well and last Friday he was acting the same way but he had a fever so I knew it was the cold that was making him not eat. But the next day he was back to his old self, eating and playing. I don't know what to do, its so frustrating and I hate seeing him like this. Has anyone gone thru this? I'd like to think I'm not alone in this... Help please!

Re: Refusing milk, what should I do?

  • Teething can make it painful to suck. My son's intake of formula went way down while teeth were popping through but then gradually went back to normal.

  • I bought him sippy cups, hopefully that will do the trick.

  • Have you tried faster nipples?

  • DS formula intake has definitely gone down. He refuses the bottle so many times during the day.  I think it is from teething, I know it hurts them to suck. I tried change nipple flow to level 3...helped a little.....I tried sippy cup...but he just thinks that its a toy.

I started giving him more oatmeal mixed with formula, and mix formula in all solids, because he will eat solids just fine, but refuses the bottle.

He is getting better at taking the bottle more, but sometimes he refuses it, so I go back to mixing it with oatmeal or apple sauce.

It is frustrating because you are worried if he is eating enough, and pedi says DS is underweight, so it is so frustrating to me when I feel like he is not drinking enough formula, and then we go for weight check and he is not gaining as much as the pedi would like. That's why I have been mixing formula with his solids to try and get him to get more formula when he doesn't want the bottle.

hope your LO gets back on track soon

Yes, I've tried faster nipples. He just takes a few sips and then stops

Yea, I've been giving him more cereal/oatmeal and solids, that he eats with no problem. Hope our little babies get over this phase soon and may your little one gain the weight he needs. Must be stressful =/

it is stressful...but in the end DH and I feel that DS is healthy and growing just fine.  he is low on the curve line...but he is meeting all his milestones, very active. i try not to stress out about it because i know he is healthy. i just spoke with daycare and he actually finish all 6 oz bottles feedings so far today..so that is good...some days are good and some days he just doesn't want it.

  • It's probably teething..our lil guy did the same last week and is working out his top two teeth... it's rough on mommy and daddy but he is fine and we just added a bit more milk to the solids, he dropped to less than half his normal intake at the peak of his off period..Tongue Tied  I bought some freezer pop molds and froze water so he could have cold  non messy pops t suck on if he needed them that he can hold on to.

  • DS did this - I think part of it was teeth and also we had to adjust the timing of bottles and food. We had to space out his feedings so he would finish his bottle and also gave him solids after his bottle. He loves his solids but I wanted to make sure he got his bottle in and so far it has worked for us.
