So.....I've read a few posts that talk about giving LO a snack. I have not been giving DD snacks. Or rather, I have not been giving her solids as a snack - I nurse her between meals.
Should I transition to giving her a solid snack instead of nursing? Or nurse *and* snack? What are you all giving as snacks?
Here's what our feeding day looks like normally (until about a week ago we were BF-ing 5x a day. I've sort of combined lunch and the late am BF-ing session and DD seems okay with that so now we are BF-ing 4x a day):
~6:30 - wake/nurse
~7:30 - breakfast
~11:00 - lunch (until about a week ago, we nursed at ~10:30 (post am nap) and lunch was later, but I've removed that nursing session and moved lunch earlier and DD doesn't seem to mind. Should I have an am snack instead?)
~1:30 - nurse before pm nap
~4:30 - afternoon nursing (snack here instead/in addition?)
6:00 - dinner
7:00 - nurse before bed
Re: Snacks and the BF-ing schedule
BFP #2 March 2011, Baby Girl born November 2011!!!
DD hasn't cut back on nursing and she's been doing BLW since 6m. Here's our schedule:
830 - wake up and nurse
930 - Breakfast (full meal of solid food)
1015/1030 - 12/1230 - nurse/nap
1230 - lunch (full meal of solid food)
1 - nurse
230 - snack
330 - nurse (SOMETIMES I can make it until 5/530)
430 - snack
530 - nurse
645 - dinner (full meal of solid food)
8 - nurse/bed
So, I nurse usually 6 times a day and DD eats solids like nobody's business during meals and snacks. Just wanted to give my opinion and say that DD shows a strong interest in wanting that nursing time, but she still eats us out of house and home.
You can easily tell when she is hungry, so the snacks between meals are pretty important. I've tried to sneak a nursing session away, but she always catches me. We noticed pretty early on that the snacks were a must as she can get pretty cranky or tired so nursing and snacks are essential to this kid's happiness.
we don't have a schedule, it varies SO much, but in addition to offering three meals a day, I offer food when I eat it, and a cup of water throughout the day.
sometimes ds isn't interested in sitting down for a formal breakfast, so I offer fruit or something later in the morning.
when we are out all day, I pack fruit, mini rice cakes, and those fruit/veg packets that he can suck on (I like happy tot brand). At home, I offer yogurt, fruit/veg, if we are out, a part of a German pretzel (minus salt).
He still nurses quite a bit, this week more than usual because I think he is getting more teeth.

Thanks, y'all. The she eats when I eat (for snacks) sounds like a good idea EXCEPT I usually snack when she's napping. Ooops. But it might be nice to sit with her and have a snack together.
DD has always been weird with hunger cues so that's the other reason this has been hard. I could offer her nursing 15x a day and she wouldn't ever refuse! Same with (some) solids - I don't think she'd ever turn down cheese! Ha!
