C-sections

C-section scheduled for tomorrow...panic has set in. Talk me off the ledge!

Hey ladies-

After playing quite a waiting game with my twin little ladies, we decided this past Thursday to go ahead with a c-section to deliver them because of their positioning. I'm so excited to meet them, but now that I'm 25 hours and 52 minutes from meeting them (but who's counting??Wink) I'm really starting to freak out about the procedure itself.

Any words of advice, things to expect, or encouragement you can give me to tell me this isn't going to be so bad? I've been Googling info, but it's not helping me feel any better. Would love to hear from ladies who have been through it.

  • Get up and walk as soon as possible! I think that really helped my recovery. Take the pain meds if you need them and always take your stool softener.

  • Ditto previous post! Drink lots of water. Walking helped ALOT!  But be sure to also take it easy and don't over do it. Good luck!

  • It will be ok!  I was terrified of a c/s, but DD was breech.  It turned out great.  Yay for meeting your babies!

  • Everything the PP's said!  My experience was actually pretty great!  Let the nurses help you with everything and anything, that's what they are there for and they really don't mind!  Let them help you get in and out of bed the first few times you try.  Get up and change positions in the room often -  As soon as I could, I got out of bed and sat in a chair for all of my meals.  Then I did a little bit of walking and then rested in bed for a bit.

I know everyone is always in a rush to get home, but I stayed the full 4 days and am so glad I did.  It's nice to have the extra help while you can have it and get extra rest before you go home.  Plus... I didn't think my body was ready to go home on the 3rd day even though they told me I could if I wanted to.  My insurance paid for 4 nights, so that's what I took :)

  • Ask if you can get cath AFTER the spinal! My nurses were like sure! Just remember pretty much every thing is out of your hands for the actual procedure so just try to let go and be calm. And its super quick. They roll ya in surgery give ya spinal n cath. Ten min later you have your babies! Tell them if your itchy after. They can fix it. Take the meds!!!! Congrats momma!
  • I was terrified of my C-section, but honestly it was great! The worst part about the entire day/procedure was just getting the IV. Once my IV was in, nothing else hurt that bad or was that scary. I'm 10 days out and feel fantastic! Honestly I was very pro-natural birth prior to my C-section, but I'm strongly considering RCS after my great experience.

  • It will be ok, but I totally get being scared.

All the pp's had great advice. I say - bring snacks/water. I was HUNGRY and never had any nausea during or after surgery, so it's nice to have some water to sip on or granola bar to nibble on. I had been in labor a long time so i really wanted to eat/drink.

Get babies on your breasts as soon as you can. Assuming they are healthy and all is well, there is no reason for you to be separated from them.

Best of luck for an easy delivery and smooth recovery!

  • I went through a C-section with my first baby, and I would much rather have had a scheduled C-section than one after a long labor like I did. Even so, the C-section was not that bad. Just stay on top of your pain meds and let other people help you. Recovery is pretty quick and easy (around 1-2 weeks), although I have nothing to compare it to since I didn't go through a vaginal birth.

     Hope that helps, and congrats!

  • Hold a pillow over your stomach if you have to laugh or cough!!  Congrats
  • A c-section was the last thing I wanted or thought would happen and I actually cried when the doctor told me it was time to stop pushing and go in for one.  The vision and fear of it in my head was MUCH worse than reality.  It was super quick and when I heard my son cry the first time nothing else mattered.

Definitely ask for a cough pillow- it hurts like hell to cough or sneeze.  The stool softeners did not help me...I had to use milk of magnesia a few days after I got home.  If you feel good do not do too much- I spent a day on the couch with a fever a few days after I got home because I had pushed it.

    Good luck!

  • I think the anticipation is the worst part.  You will probably be on the operating table, looking over at your babies thinking "  Man I was worried over nothing. This part is easy."

As far as the recovery is concerned this is my advice

    1. Stay on top on your meds.  If you wait till you feel pain, it might take a while for the meds to kick in and start working.

    2. Wear granny panties for the first week or so

    3. This is way TMI but the inactivity and the pain meds can cause constipation.  If you have gone a few days without a BM, just ask for a suppository.  You will get relief within 30 minutes or so.  I have had three c-sections and I did everything I could to get things movin down there and nothing worked.  By the third one, I wised up and could see the writing on the wall after the third day and asked for a suppository and I was so glad I did that instead of waiting hours or days for other methods to work.
