Panel recommends that all pregnant women get whooping cough vaccination to protect infant
ATLANTA ? Expert government advisers want every pregnant woman to get a whooping cough vaccination.
It?s only the second time a vaccine has been recommended during pregnancy. Flu shots are also recommended for pregnant women.
The aim of the whooping cough shot is to protect newborns, who are too young to get the vaccine.
The panel?s vote was a reaction to the resurgence in whooping cough. The nation is on track to have the worst year for whooping cough since the 1950s. There have been more than 32,000 cases, including 16 deaths, this year.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices approved the recommendation Wednesday. Federal health officials usually adopt the panel?s advice and send it to on to doctors and the public.
Re: Pertussis vaccine now recommended for ALL pregnant women
I believe the "bigger" reason to get it while still pregnant is to protect your newborn, who wouldn't be able to get it until they are 6+ months of age.
I asked my doctor about this a few weeks ago and she said I needed to get it soon, and my husband needed it too. They gave it to me that day.

Ditto-he says no. But I plan to ask again next week because we have been exposed thru a child at my sons preschool
I had my appointment this morning. When I asked the doc about it he said the same thing as yours, but then he checked the CDC website and was surprised to find that they had just changed that recommendation. He said that they used to recommend that women get it post-birth because it is a live virus and they didn't want to risk giving to mom while pregant in case she actually got sick. He is going to do some more research himself. I got the flu shot today, but will follow up on Perussis at my next appt. in two weeks.

I got it in December 2010 after DS was born, and I asked my midwife at my last appointment if I needed it again. She said I am still covered from the last time and didn't need it again.
But if you got it in 2010... does it still protect the baby now? I had mine in Feb 2010, but this article sounds like they would encourage me to get it again for this baby? I'm confused.

Happy to hear this. I was a little confused why my midwife had no idea what I was talking about! She thought I was talking about vaccinating the baby, not me and my family members.

I would ask again, the CDC okays it for PG women past 20 weeks, and since your older LO is in daycare, and still at some risk until he or she gets their final booster shot, that puts the baby at risk. One of the Jan. mom's whole family has it, including their almost 4 year old who is up to date on her vaccines, but isn't old enough for the final booster shot. I figure some protection for the baby is better than none. Like if he gets it, hopefully it will be easier to fight and be a more mild case.
Yeah, I read the article after I posted. It does seem like this would say I should get it again, not for my sake, but the baby's, but I'm kind of with the dissenters on the CDC panel. There's not a ton of data about the safety and efficacy of getting it during pregnancy, or getting it so many times/so frequently. So unless my midwife (CNM at a hospital) changes her mind, I don't see myself pushing for it.
I'm wondering too. I got it in 2010, is that sufficient?
This is what mine said.

A-men!
There is certainly no reason your DH would have to wait until LO is born. I think the sooner the better in his case! Walgreens does them.
I'm with you. I trust my doctor and the CDC over other sources.
I just had a booster when DD was born March 2011 and my doctor says I don't need another one. If I had not had the booster and needed one now, my doctor would give it to me at the hospital after LO is born.
The doc who had to test my middle dd said he believes the CDC will make the recommendation for every 5 years, so if you've had it w/ in 5 years- you are "supposed" to be fine.
If you breastfeed, that will also cover your newborn. Just in case your OB says they don't want you to get it yet.
So a coworker who is about 23 weeks pregnant and I were talking about this today. If you go the CDC.gov site and look up the Pertussiss Vaccination and go to the link for the Tdap for Pregnant Women. It actually says as of June 2011 they recommend that pregnant women get the Tdap vaccine after 20 weeks gestation. I believe it's a lifetime shot so after you get it once you don't need another one (except the tetnus booster every ten years). I'm not sure if I ever had it so hubby and I are getting it this week. I know I got a mmr and a tetnus back in 2003 but not sure on the Tdap so I'm just going to get it again.
I would think if you had it with your first child, then you are all set and shouldn't need it again.
Chrome won't work to make this a clickable link but here is the link to the CDC site. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pertussis/tdap-pregnancy-hcp.htm
pertusis isn't a lifetime shot, you need boosters- more often than the tetanus is what they have found.
