Pertussis vaccine now recommended for ALL pregnant women

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/panel-recommends-that-all-pregnant-women-get-whooping-cough-vaccination-to-protect-infant/2012/10/24/dba297ea-1dee-11e2-8817-41b9a7aaabc7_story.html

Panel recommends that all pregnant women get whooping cough vaccination to protect infant

ATLANTA ? Expert government advisers want every pregnant woman to get a whooping cough vaccination.

It?s only the second time a vaccine has been recommended during pregnancy. Flu shots are also recommended for pregnant women.

The aim of the whooping cough shot is to protect newborns, who are too young to get the vaccine.

The panel?s vote was a reaction to the resurgence in whooping cough. The nation is on track to have the worst year for whooping cough since the 1950s. There have been more than 32,000 cases, including 16 deaths, this year.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices approved the recommendation Wednesday. Federal health officials usually adopt the panel?s advice and send it to on to doctors and the public.

  • Good. Now here's to hoping women actually get it!

  • Yeah, they want you to get it while your pregnant so you don't forget to get it after you give birth.  They offered me mine in the hospital though right after DD was born in 2010.

I believe the "bigger" reason to get it while still pregnant is to protect your newborn, who wouldn't be able to get it until they are 6+ months of age.

I asked my doctor about this a few weeks ago and she said I needed to get it soon, and my husband needed it too. They gave it to me that day.

My last appt my Dr said not to get it til after LO is born.  I am debating asking him again if he still thinks that.  I would think you would want it while still pregnant to help protect LO.

Ditto-he says no.  But I plan to ask again next week because we have been exposed thru a child at my sons preschool

I had my appointment this morning.  When I asked the doc about it he said the same thing as yours, but then he checked the CDC website and was surprised to find that they had just changed that recommendation.  He said that they used to recommend that women get it post-birth because it is a live virus and they didn't want to risk giving to mom while pregant in case she actually got sick.  He is going to do some more research himself.  I got the flu shot today, but will follow up on Perussis at my next appt. in two weeks.

  • I get b12 shots every month and last month asked to get the tdap too, the injection nurse told me no because I had it in 2007. I told her it wouldn't protect the baby and that research showed the pertussis part of the vaccine didn't last the full 10years. SO I just called the office and told them about this article and explained that when I come in next week for my b12 I want it done. They are going to call me back. I'm sure they love me right now ;)

  • Yes, every pregnant women who hasn't had the shot already should get it after they hit the 20 week mark. This isn't a shot to sit and think about...just get it!

So if you got the vaccine last year, they want you to get it again while pregnant?

I got it in December 2010 after DS was born, and I asked my midwife at my last appointment if I needed it again. She said I am still covered from the last time and didn't need it again.

But if you got it in 2010... does it still protect the baby now?  I had mine in Feb 2010, but this article sounds like they would encourage me to get it again for this baby?  I'm confused.

  • i talked to my doc about this yesterday, her preference is that I wait as there is no data on the effects on pregnant women (she did say if I felt strongly about it I could get it before hand). She did say that regular caregivers and siblings should get it now.
  • I live in Ontario Canada and asked my midwife about this yesterday. She had no idea what I was talking about getting the vaccine for pregnant women. According to her they don't do it around here because we are vaccinated every 10 years and it isn't 100% effective anyways. Anyhow either way they don't like to vaccinate for anything while pregnant.

  • My Dr mentioned i should get it and the flu shot a few weeks ago. i obviously want to get it to protect my son but it worries me to do it while I'm pregnant. The article says its only the second time they have approved a vaccine to be given while pregnant, so it concerns me that normally they dont want you to. Obviously there are reasons they normally don't recommend it. I'm confused on what to do.
  • Ditto on Ontario and my OB saying not to bother.  I've had the shot and the booster over the years as part of my regular health care visits with my GP.  Maybe in the States you aren't vaccinated for it at the same times Canadians are?  Or at all?  I think it's good to have had it at some point.

Happy to hear this. I was a little confused why my midwife had no idea what I was talking about! She thought I was talking about vaccinating the baby, not me and my family members.

My dr. says I can't get it until after I deliver as well.  DH got his last week and DD is up to date on her vaccines.

I had also checked with my pedi about his vac schedule (which I follow) and baby will get the first booster at 2 months. I'll still be on mat leave for a bit after that so that's been my plan. However, I think I may ask my dr. again at next appt.

I would ask again, the CDC okays it for PG women past 20 weeks, and since your older LO is in daycare, and still at some risk until he or she gets their final booster shot, that puts the baby at risk. One of the Jan. mom's whole family has it, including their almost 4 year old who is up to date on her vaccines, but isn't old enough for the final booster shot. I figure some protection for the baby is better than none. Like if he gets it, hopefully it will be easier to fight and be a more mild case.

Yeah, I read the article after I posted. It does seem like this would say I should get it again, not for my sake, but the baby's, but I'm kind of with the dissenters on the CDC panel. There's not a ton of data about the safety and efficacy of getting it during pregnancy, or getting it so many times/so frequently.  So unless my midwife (CNM at a hospital) changes her mind, I don't see myself pushing for it.

  • I got mine 2 years ago as well, and I have been told that was enough and I don't need it for 10 years. I asked the local health dept on the phone if I still have antibodies to pass on and they said I should. I am nervous that it may weaken, so I would get it twice if they would let me!

There is certainly no reason your DH would have to wait until LO is born.  I think the sooner the better in his case!  Walgreens does them.

  • After reading this new report, it is saying that basically you have to have the shot in the 3rd trimester to pass on strong antibodies. Even women that got in early pregnancy. So I called the health dept back and she only said that they go by the CDC recommendations and have never heard of this. I hate how a report comes out and it may take a year for a Dr to get on board! I'm due in 3 weeks so I need another shot, today! Is it safe to get it a second time after 2 years? My Dh did. The nurse said he had it a few years back and gave it to him again anyways. I will ask my OB tomorrow at my apt.
  • I had the booster in 2009, and the blood work done at the beginning of this pregnancy showed that I still had enough antibodies in my system for protection. Because of this my OB has said I do not need another shot. I'll ask about it again, but she checked my records to make sure when she administered the flu shot, so she seems to think I'm good on this. I will definitely have to follow up with this.

I'm with you. I trust my doctor and the CDC over other sources.

I just had a booster when DD was born March 2011 and my doctor says I don't need another one. If I had not had the booster and needed one now, my doctor would give it to me at the hospital after LO is born.

  • The doc who had to test my middle dd said he believes the CDC will make the recommendation for every 5 years, so if you've had it w/ in 5 years- you are "supposed" to be fine.

  • I googled the study to try to get more info - and I pulled up an article from the Oxford Journals jid.oxfordjournals.org , and what I got from that, was that while we will still have protection as mothers, the antibodies that get passed on to the placenta only last for a short time. I can't do the report justice, or laymans's terms, but the title is Prevalence of Pertussis Antibodies in Maternal Delivery, Cord, and Infant Serum, if you wanted to google it. It led me to believe that there is a certain "window" to pass on pertussis antibodies. I agree with the PP on breastfeeding. That should help as well. Just confusing info.......
  • So a coworker who is about 23 weeks pregnant and I were talking about this today. If you go the CDC.gov site and look up the Pertussiss Vaccination and go to the link for the Tdap for Pregnant Women. It actually says as of June 2011 they recommend that pregnant women get the Tdap vaccine after 20 weeks gestation. I believe it's a lifetime  shot so after you get it once you don't need another one (except the tetnus booster every ten years). I'm not sure if I ever had it so hubby and I are getting it this week. I know I got a mmr and a tetnus back in 2003 but not sure on the Tdap so I'm just going to get it again.

I would think if you had it with your first child, then you are all set and shouldn't need it again.

Chrome won't work to make this a clickable link but here is the link to the CDC site. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pertussis/tdap-pregnancy-hcp.htm

pertusis isn't a lifetime shot, you need boosters- more often than the tetanus is what they have found.
