Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Babysitting Question

I have a 2 month old son and my husband and I recently decided to ask my mother to babysit for us.  She agreed, but wants me to bring my son to her house.  So my question is, when you have someone babysit is it usually at your house or at their house?  I would really prefer him be at home because that's where all his stuff is and it just makes me more comfortable.  Thoughts?

Re: Babysitting Question

  • When my MIL babysits, it's at her house.  She prefers to have all of her own stuff, especially since the baby is little and sleeps a lot, she can have her computer and her own chair and kindle and stuff like that.  She has a pack n play and some baby stuff for him but it's not like he's playing with toys yet or anything so he doesn't need much.  If we actually hire a babysitter that isn't family, I would want that person to babysit in our home.

  • Yeah, this early on there is still alot of down time where the baby is sleeping, eating, or cuddling and it's probably more comfortable for your MIL to be around her own stuff. I agree, technically it would be easier for her to come to you but hey, it's free babysitting so if that's her only request then you might need to just go along with it.

  • It totally depends on who it is and where we're going and for how long.

  • I think any of us would prefer an in-home sitter but you're kinda at the mercy of the sitter. I've asked my MIL specifically to do it at our home instead of hers. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. lol I need her too badly to not bend to her needs.
  • I agree that it's free babysitting, and maybe because of that I will take him over there.  I just dread bringing all the stuff.  The only thing she has is a crib. He won't sleep without his swaddle me, pacifier, or sea horse, so I would need those. A stroller or carrier if she wants to go for a walk.  My son loves his play gym, bouncer, or swing... I'm obviously not taking those, but if she came here, she could use them if he were fussy, which is often. He actually does play with toys (grasps) or listens to me read books, all of which are here. He has to have diapers, wipes, clothes, and bottles.. It all just makes me dizzy thinking about it! Honestly, I would almost rather not go at all.

  • ..for my other sitter I bought a bunch of things from a second hand shop that she agreed to just keep at her house. I'm in NJ it's called "Once Upon a Child" if you're in the region. It's AWESOME. :)

and yes, welcome to the club, wipes/diaps/etc gets really annoying to tow around but that's what mommies do LOL

  • I'd say this young and day time at their house would be fine. However when they're older and playing with toys or if it's past bedtime I'd want at my own house. Plus older once they're mobile I'd prefer knowing its at my baby-proofed house.
