Wisdom Teeth

So I am pretty sure im getting my wisdom teeth in... is it safe to remove them while pregnant? I know I wouldnt be able to take much for the pain which really sucks and I know they have to do xrays and stuff so I dont know how that would work. Has anyone else had them removed while pregnant?

Re: Wisdom Teeth

  • Nope. Sorry! The anesthesia isn't good to under go, and you don't want the pain of that without the pain meds.

Just wait til baby's born. That's what I'm having to do!!

  • They would only be extracted now if there were an infection or other immediate need to do so. Otherwise just wait until after baby is born--no need to do it electively right now.

  • Mine are coming in now and there's nothing I can do about it other than take painkillers. It really, really blows.

  • Try the numbing stuff people put on their teeth for pain, if pregnant people can that is (baby brain moment here - can't for the life of me think of what it is called).

I had mine taken out years ago and had to be put under and the pain after was excrutiating.  Unless you have an infection or the pain is so unbareable I would suggest waiting until after if you can.

  • DH had his removed without anesthesia, and it wasn't bad at all. I'm sure it depends on the situation, but it is doable in certain situations. I don't have wisdom teeth so I can speak from experience.

  • I have to get mine out as well! I waiting untill after the baby is born and untill i stop breastfeeding just in case. Xrays arnt safe while pregnant and i know i will want to be put under because im a huge baby when it comes to pain. All i want to do is fall alseep and wake up with no wisdom teeth bothering me. hehe

  • It is fine to have teeth pulled while pregnant as long as they use something like Marcaine to numb you which doesn't cross the placental barrier. But if you don't think you will be able to do it without being put to sleep or use of antianxiety type pills then I would wait. If there is an infection I would also wait as you will most likely be put on strong antibiotics. The best thing you can do is go to a specialist like an oral surgeon for a consult and see what he/she has to say. There are a couple risks and side effects to consider when you have wisdom teeth pulled so it's always best to go to a professional. It is also perfectly safe to have xrays taken while pregnant. Digital xrays are best since the amount radiation from 18 consecutive xrays is equivalent to ten minutes in the sun. I am a dental assistant and I am around xrays all day long. Just make sure you wear the lead vest
  • I had them out before I was pregnant. I was knocked out and only took Motrin after. I would recommend waiting until you are through having baby. Infections can happen since they put stitches in and I wouldn't want to complicate anything this far along. Use warm and cold compresses along with Tylenol to ease pain. It's not an easy recovery either so u may wait until u can have your so help with feeding and diapering lo.

  • I haven't found a dentist that would do them while I was pregnant and I'm not doing it while breastfeeding either so I have a while to go before I can get mine removed. I have to remove all 4 of mine as they are all impacted but not for almost another 1 or so.

  • When I got mine out (a number of years ago) they just numbed the area and I was completely fine - no need to go under unless you have dental anxiety, imo.

I had a really bad reaction after taking the Rx painkiller. (Extreme drop in blood pressure, nausia, blackout, almost fainted.) I'm not positive that the prescription was the cause, but I didn't want to take it again to find out. I ended up just taking ibuprofen for the pain. It wasn't comfortable, but it wasn't unbearable or anything. I imagine Tylenol would provide a little less pain relief, but I still think it'd be doable.

I'd probably just have them extracted and be done with it. That being said, if you don't have a compelling reason to have them out and you're already dealing with other pregnancy-related discomforts, it seems totally reasonable to wait if that's what you prefer.

  • I've got one that they said I MUST get out as soon as I can after having the baby...which I'm not looking forward to! I've been putting it off for a couple years because it's 1/2 out and not causing pain. I'll try to do it while I'm on leave, because I'll have no sicktime left!
  • I would wait if I were you. I got a dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth out and don't handle pain killers well so I was just in pain for 2 weeks and it would probably be worse if I'd been pregnant.
